Sen. Craig resigns over sex sting

BOISE, Idaho - Idaho Sen. Larry Craig resigned Saturday over a men's room sex sting, bowing to pressure from fellow Republicans worried about a scandal dimming their election prospects.

"I apologize for what I have caused," Craig said.

Craig's resignation completed a stunning downfall that began Monday with the disclosure that he had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge following his arrest during a sex sting in a Minneapolis airport men's room.

Although leading members of his own party had called for him to step down, Craig steadfastly resisted resigning for days, contending that he had done nothing wrong and that his only mistake was pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

Craig was defiant after the arrest and guilty plea were first reported. "I am not gay. I never have been gay," he declared Tuesday in Boise, Idaho, with his wife, Suzanne, at his side. He said he had kept the incident from aides, friends and family and later pleaded guilty "in hopes of making it go away."

Craig, 62, has represented Idaho in Congress for more than a quarter-century and was up for re-election next year. He had not said if he would run for a fourth term in 2008 and was expected to announce his plans this fall.

"It is with sadness and deep regret that I announce it is my intention to resign from the Senate effective Sept. 30," Craig said, with his wife again at his side and Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter standing behind him.

"For any public official at this moment in time to be standing with Larry Craig is in itself a humbling experience," Craig said.

Craig was arrested June 11 in a police undercover vice operation in a men's room at the Minneapolis airport. The arresting officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia, said in his report that the restroom is known location for homosexual activity.

"I am not gay. I never have been gay," Craig said at a news conference here Tuesday, a day after his guilty plea became public.

Republicans, worried about the scandal's effect on next year's election, suffered a further setback Friday when veteran Republican Sen. John Warner announced he will retire rather than seek a sixth term. Democrats captured Virginia's other Senate seat from the GOP in the 2006 election.

Let’s Play Who’s the Victim?!
http://onecosmos.blogspot.com/

One of the appeals of leftism is that you can never be called a hypocrite. That is, if you have no standards, then there is no standard by which to judge you.

Why then are leftists so incredibly, gleefully judgmental? Because, as Polanyi http://www.amazon.com/Everyman-Revived-Common-Michael-Polanyi/dp/0802840795 pointed out, one of the defining characteristics of leftism is the subversion of traditional morality.

But since you cannot eliminate the moral impulse, it ends up becoming unhinged, that is, uncontained by any transcendent moral boundaries. Therefore, the moral impulse “fuses,” as it were, with what is below instead of what is above, and becomes a dangerous vehicle of the most base passions. This is why leftism is associated with the greatest mass murderers of all time — Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, et al.

In a lengthy essay entitled Hitler Was a Socialist, http://jonjayray.tripod.com/hitler.html John J. Ray makes reference to the notoriously “slippery standards”of the left, writing that they “have no fixed principles. If a principle suits their rhetorical needs of today they will proclaim their loyalty to it — and then cheerfully adopt the opposite principle tomorrow if that happens to suit the rhetorical needs of that day.”

Regarding the absence of fixed principles, I can remember on many occasions hearing liberals insist that Saddam was “our creation,” and that, like the Shah of Iran or Marcos in the Philipines, we were morally responsible for him.

If true — which it wasn’t — then it would follow that we would be responsible for removing him and “restoring” freedom.

Since that is exactly what President Bush did, the left had to fabricate ulterior motives for the liberation of Iraq — Haliburton, big oil, imposing theocracy in America, etc.

Because of the traumatic cognitive dissonance of President Bush putting their vacant ideals into action, the left had to detach from reality and enter a parallel looniverse of political discourse, in which Bush was and is condemned on wholly fantasized grounds. This is what I mean about the fusing of the moral impulse with the unconscious “primary process,” the latter of which is rooted in wish fulfillment rather than the dictates of reality.

In a passage that encapsulates volumes that could be written about the left, Ray discusses the deep structure of leftism, which is always the same, even while the surface content changes from era to era, year to year, day to day, and even moment to moment (as anyone knows who has tried to engage in rational debate with a leftist — you can’t do so, because the rhetorical ground keeps shifting under your feet). Like the borderline personality, they possess a kind of “stable instability” that is their only enduring structure: ..” [snip] Click link to continue:http://onecosmos.blogspot.com/

You sound worried. Do you actively do these things?

Why would you reach for your shoe?
Why would you pick toilet paper up off of the floor as it is the maid’s job.
Why would you not check the toilet paper supply before sitting down?

Why are you defending this lying pervert.

I just hope that he has not passed on AIDS to his wife or is that okay with you too?.

Too bad. Craig did a lot of good.

Yes, he did. A lot of good.

It will be very interesting to see if he can get this charge expunged.

So I'm told from a close acquaintance who lives in Idaho, that everybody in Idaho knew he was gay.....and they've known it for years...and they're glad he's gone. Course she's a democrat...and according to her Idaho is such a republican state that a republican could commit murder and he/she would get elected. anyway.....

So this is what I have to put up with....I kept quiet, and never even brought up Clinton's rape accussations.

>How come republicans don’t realize that?

More pertinent is why these officials troll for strangers to engage in homosexual sex in a public bathroom?

Good God, that is outright perverted.

A number of people here just don’t seem to get it. It doesn’t matter whether Senator Craig is gay, or even that he pled guilty to a misdomeanor. What matters is that he was trolling for sex in a public restroom.

Many people find this very disturbing, and the restroom he chose is one where there is a fair chance of children being present.

For those who have never used a public mens’ room, let me explain a few things. Men do not tap each other’s feet, while sitting on the toilet. (Craig did this repeatedly.) Men do not reach under the partitions to display their hand to the man in the adjacent stall. Men do not peer through the gaps between stalls to look at the man taking a crap in the next stall.

I am 53 years old, have used public restrooms thousands of times, and never seen any of these behaviors. Any one of them would have provoked a strong negative reaction on my part. Men don’t act like this unless they are seeking to do something that is completely inappropriate in a public restroom.

I was looking for love in all the wrong places
Looking for love in too many faces
Searching your eyes, looking for traces
Of what.. I'm dreaming of...
Hopin' to find a friend and a lover
God bless the day I discover
Another heart, lookin' for love

You came a'knocking at my stall's door..
You're everything I've been looking for..

Well if it is any consolation to him, his constant lying and now his determination to use his “forces” to have a guilty plea changed, makes him look like a bigger ass than he did when it was just about his solicitation for gay sex.

Senator Craig’s resignation was a class act, unlike most GOP speeches. I didn’t hear Sen. Craig attempt to place one word of blame on the Clintons for his own criminal conduct.

What other speeches have done this?

Please throw out some examples because I don't know what you're talking about.

"I am not gay. I never have been gay," Craig said at a news conference here Tuesday

Of course, he didn't say anything about "bi".

BTW, I tend to agree with the caller to Rush's show that suspected that Hillary's operatives had this Republican Senator Craig Gay Toilet Sex Trolling story released in order to edge-out the Hsu/Clinton Potentially Criminal Influence-buying/campaign Cash Laundering Scandal (or whatever you choose to call it) news story.

He is a moron if he thinks going to court, being sworn in then having to answer questions about his behavior is goingto be a winner for him. “Mr. Craig is this the first time you have solicitted sex in a mens room?”

I'm glad he's going (not yet gone) because I'm tired of his pro illegal alien pattern of behavior. His pro 2nd amendment record was good, but he wasn't always as careful as he should have been. That bill to protect the gun dealers from frivilous lawsuits was left wide open to lots of anti-gun amendments. Craig had to pull the bill to avoid being the author of a major league disaster for 2nd amendment rights.

The local news indicates that Jim Risch will be the replacement appoint by Gov Butch Otter. Risch hasn't always been seen as a solid conservative...especially by some of the local conservative talk radio types in eastern Idaho. The Democrats wanted a nameless, faceless nobody to be selected to replace Craig so they wouldn't have to run against a well known incumbent. Tough. They are the minority party in Idaho. When they successfully elect a challenger, they can start making some demands.

The good news is that Hsu turned himself in. He is currently jailed in California. That was probably a calculated risk. Better than being another Arkancide.
