Germans Arrest 3, Thwart "Imminent Threat"

Three men have been arrested for planning attacks on Frankfurt's international airport and the U.S. military base in Ramstein, the German Defense Minister said Wednesday.

"There was an imminent threat," Franz Josef Jung told Germany's ARD broadcaster. He declined to elaborate.

Two of the suspects had German citizenship while the third was Pakistani, Germany's Sudwestrundfunk public broadcaster said.

German federal prosecutors said they had arrested three suspected members of "an Islamic motivated terrorist organization." It was not immediately clear whether the three were suspected of having links to al Qaeda.

Sudwestrundfunk said the men were arrested Tuesday evening and were close to carrying out the attacks. German and U.S. officials have warned of the possibility of a terrorist attack, and security measures have been raised, they said.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Officials said the 35 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide, stored in a hideout, could have been mixed with other additives to produce a bomb with the explosive power of 550 kilograms of TNT.

“This would have enabled them to make bombs with more explosive power than the ones used in the London and Madrid bombings,” Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany’s Federal Crime Office, said at a joint news conference with Harms.

The three suspects - two Germans and a Turk - first came to the attention of authorities because they had been observing a U.S. military facility at the end of 2006, officials said. All three had undergone training at camps in Pakistan run by the Islamic Jihad Union, and had formed a German cell of the group.

The Islamic Jihad Union was described as a Sunni Muslim group based in Central Asia that was an offshoot of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group with origins in that country.

A top legislator said an attack could have occurred “in a few days,” noting a “sensitive period” that includes the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.”

Wonder what they made of the Florida guys in South Carolina who were eventually busted for terrorism even though they claimed their car full of pipe bombs was just to “celebrate” one of the guy’s (the Egyptian or the Pakistani’s) birthday. For weeks the FBI denied terrorism but eventually their computers came into play.

This is a GREAT bust.
I am very happy about it.

I said this yesterday and still hold this opinion:

No special thoughts on my part.

Jihad is everyday and the jihad is global.
If there is a window of opportunity and the means;
the jihadis will attack.
Children are encouraged to go for jihad.
Recruiting is heavy for jihad.
The jihad propaganda is very thick on the internet.

As for 9/11/01; it is a reminder of 1 jihad attack.

How many more attacks will occur in America?
I don’t know.

Is there an attack pending (somewhere in the world)?

Probably.

It feels like 9/10/01 to me.

The Germans said the plot was “well advanced”. In the absense of any other info one could surmise that Sep 11 could have been the target date and that is why the German police acted. Someone has already pointed out that the Danes have made some arrests as well.

Europeans are in pre-WWII mindset. If we put our heads in the sand Hitler will go away or, if we’re nice to him, he won’t kill us. Fairly amazing to watch history repeating itself. Even more eerie is that it is Britain and the US, once again, bellying up to the bar. I wouldn’t read too much into the British semi-withdrawl from Basra. If they get hit again in the homeland I suspect that will change fairly quickly. The Islamterrorists are so committed to violence that they attack in any direction without discrimination. Bad in the short term. But, as is happening in Iraq, eventually the population wearies of the murders and turns on the bastards.

KARLSRUHE, Germany - The arrest of three men in Germany foiled a plot to carry out "massive" bomb attacks, Federal Prosecutor Monika Harms said Wednesday.

"They were planning massive attacks," Harms told a press conference, adding that the suspects had amassed vast amounts of the same chemical used by the suicide bombers in the 2005 London public transport attacks that killed 56 people.

The material could provoke an explosion with the same strength as 550 kilogrammes (1,210 pounds) of dynamite, she said.

Harms told reporters the three suspects, who are all in their 20s, belonged to the radical Islamic Jihad Union, and had attended a militant training camp in Pakistan last year.
