Fred Thompson Stumps in Cedar Rapids
KCRG-TV9 (ABC Affiliate for Cedar Rapids/Iowa City) ^ | September 8, 2007 | Erin Leach

You may be used to seeing his name on both the silver screen and the small screen. Now Fred Thompson is hoping you'll see it on the ballot during the next presidential election.

The veteran actor and former Tennessee senator announced his candidacy last Thursday...months later than his rivals. Today, the republican made his first appearance in Cedar Rapids.

Thompson might be the man of the hour today in Cedar Rapids but he and the other candidates have a lot of work to do to gain the support of Iowans. Marie Vanourny says, "At the moment, I'm gathering more information on both sides."

But now, they've got another option on the Republican side, only he hit the campaign trail far later than his rivals. Thompson says, "It's really not late by historical standards, everyone else just got in early.”

And voters seem to think his strategy is smart. Vanourny adds, "I think he is probably smart for doing that. He's got a lot of publicity and he hasn't spent a lot of money yet."

But jumping into the race for the White House wasn't an easy decision for Thompson. He says, "It has not been my personal goal to hold this office. I just feel like it's time that I stepped up and that I have something to offer the country if the country can use me."

So far, he's got some fans. Republican Virginia Bailey says, "I like the way he communicates, actually the way he speaks, and I like the friendly manner in which he speaks."

He credits years in front of the camera for some of that polish but insists this run for the White House is nothing like his acting career. He says, "It's the difference between unreal and real and this is real."

Here's where Fred Thompson stands on the issues:

On Iraq, Thompson says that backing out now would show that our country is weak and that Americans are not united.

On healthcare, he dismisses the idea of universal healthcare. Instead, he proposes an open marketplace situation that would provide individual freedom and competition to drive down prices.

On immigration, he is in favor of securing our borders and opposes amnesty in any form.

And finally, on gay marriage, he supports a constitutional amendment that would prohibit judges from overturning state laws prohibiting same-sex marriage.

(BTW, gays can already vote.)

I'm aware of that but by 2012, I think the number of gays voting for the GOP will be diminished to practically nil. Right now, there are some gay Pubbies.

Gays tend to be upper income earners, so as long as they hate taxes as much as heterosexuals, they will remain closet Republicans.

***Why does that sound “loony”?

We’re in the fight for our lives in ‘08. The way things are going in this nation, this could very well be our last shot at the White House. By 2012, all the illegal Mexicans, gays, Welfare Queens and crack ho’s will be voting enmasse.***

Whats “loony” to me is the mainstream media not confronting Hillary with this, something that should be very disturbing to Americans. This is not China, Cuba, or other countries that censor the public!

The last good dem prez maybe, but even JFK was a godsend compared to today's traitors. And don't forget ol Zell Miller, the way he ripped up sissy chrissy matthews at the 04 GOP convention was a sight I will never forget.....God bless him!

Zell Miller remained loyal to the D party when Jumpin' Jim Jeffords gave the Senate to the Dems.

"Ol' Zell" could have given it back to the Rs but, apparently, "Ol' Zell" lacked the courage of his alleged convictions.

Not true. Zell has always been a demo and said he will always be one. However, the Democrat party has not always been so traitorously eager to surrender to our enemies as it is now, and this the main reason Zell is fed up with the modern Dem party but doesn't think that the party should be surrendered to the surrender monkeys.

Ol Zell is a good guy and most definitely has the courage of his convictions. Very unfair for you to charge him otherwise given how in recent years he has ripped democrates several new ones over the war on terror.
