INDIAN WELLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a unanimous Sunday morning vote, hundreds of members of the California Republican Party agreed to work to end the states 31-year ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants. The official vote was taken at the California Republican Partys semiannual convention which featured appearances by presidential candidate U.S. Senator John McCain, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the governors of Texas, Florida, Utah, and Minnesota.
The pro-nuclear power resolution, authored by California State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine), was unanimously approved the day before by the state Partys Initiatives Committee. The resolution places the full weight of the party of more than 5.3 million voters behind a ballot initiative to overturn Californias obsolete ban on the construction of new, safe, clean, and reliable nuclear power plants. The initiative is known as the California Energy Independence and Zero Carbon Dioxide Emission Electrical Generation Act of 2008.
The formal ballot title of the initiative was assigned last week by the Attorney General: Nuclear Energy. Removal of Prohibitions on the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants.
Assemblyman DeVore and his group, Power For California, are now gathering the 433,971 signatures needed to place the initiative on the June 2008 ballot.
After the vote Mr. DeVore said, Im delighted with the unanimous support of the California Republican Party in favor of building modern nuclear power plants. The only way we can meet Californias ambitious mandate to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent in 13 years is if we allow the construction of new nuclear power plants.
A recent opinion poll in California showed likely voters to be in favor of building nuclear power plants to meet Californias growing energy needs by a margin of 52 percent to 42 percent.
Hot temperatures last week strained the California power grid, causing a Stage One Emergency Alert as well as several major power outages.
Our own power was out for about 11 hours at our home on Labor Day, DeVore remarked, It was 103 outside and miserable inside. This was a powerful reminder that reliable, affordable, and clean electricity is a basic necessity of modern life.
California State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore represents about 450,000 people in coastal Orange County. He recently retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard. He was an aerospace and defense executive before being elected in 2004.

I will believe it, when I see the first plants started.
FYI Ping.
Jerry Brown will retitle it, "The Republicans Want You To Glow" Act on the ballot.
Realistically how will they get decent electrical power and fresh water... Nuclear power/desalinization... sometimes I wish some one would roll up some recycled news print and whack each of the anti’s on the head in California...
The 9th Circus Court will over rule the ballot initiative as ‘Unconstitutional’ if it passes for Kalifornicans to have more reliable and cheaper power as it discriminates against alternative energy lifestyles.
The 9th circuit would not rule on a State Initiative,n it would be appealed through the state court system. Don't North Karalinaholes go to skool?
Nice to see a little life in the Cali Pubbie office holders. Hooray for the Green Atom, build away!!
Leftists are about to go “nuclear” (pun intended) ;-)
Nuke POwer
Now!!
Thanks!!!
Actually, 9th Ciruit can, does, and has ruled on State Initiatives if it is challenged on US Constitution grounds.
They tossed out California’s Prop 187 which would have denied public services to illegal aliens. It passed the voters by a large majority, but was challenged on the grounds that it violated the illegal’s Constitutional rights to free public education. Prop 187 was struck down by the 9th Circuit and illegals are still sucking money out of the California public school system as well as other public services 187 would have made them ineligible for.
Yeah, well read this one again and see if that's likely. If this is challenged it will be in state court.
They need money to get this on the ballot. No CA initiative in recent memory has gotten to the ballot without paid signature gatherers.

Thanks fer da PING!!! Have a look at my new tailfeather(tagline)...
Catchy title. I’ll do my part for signatures.
A not bad opinion piece in the LA Times... 29 initiatives currently in circulation:

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Prop 187 was never tried in the 9th Circuit. An appeal was filed, but Gray Davis agreed to mediation... then rolled over dead withdrawing the appeal.
I stand corrected.
Still ... it WAS a federal judge that placed the restraining order which prevented 187 from being implemented. And it was waiting for review by the 9th Circuit when Gray Davis pulled it for mediation instead.
The original poster’s somewhat satirical comment that some loon could find some grounds for a federal court to void the vote of Californians on a ballot initiative to build more nuclear powerplants is not so farfetched. Say the never-ending Nevada dispute over Yucca Mountain as a waste repository. A Federal judge might maintain a moratorium on new nuke plants on the grounds that there is no place ready for the additional waste.
