Rival charges Hillary Clinton turned blind eye to Hsu's past
The Examiner via Drudge Report ^ | September 11, 2007 | Bill Sammon

Hillary Clinton's links to illegal fundraising by Asian-Americans in 1996 should have made her wary of accepting $850,000 from a fugitive Asian-American this year, a rival presidential campaign said Tuesday.

The criticism came from an adviser to former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson, who chaired a Senate investigation into illegal contributions by Asian-Americans to Bill Clinton's re-election campaign and the couple's legal defense fund in the 1996 election cycle.

Thompson adviser Rich Galen said Clinton's 2008 campaign has become "the sequel" to her husband's scandal-plagued 1996 campaign.

Late Monday, Clinton announced she was returning $850,000 raised by fugitive Norman Hsu, who jumped bail in 1992 after being convicted of defrauding investors of $1 million. Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said the campaign was "unaware" of a warrant for Hsu's arrest.

Galen was unconvinced.

"You have to look at this with a great deal of skepticism that - having been through this sort of thing in '96 - that nobody thought to say, 'Hey, you know, we better take another look at this before we take all this money,' " he said.

"And the fact that nobody did - or if they did, they decided to just put their finger in front of their lips and say shhh and try to sneak off into the distance - tells you a great deal about the fact that the Hillary Clinton campaign is the Bill Clinton campaign redux."

The MSM will not care just as they did not care in 1996. The MSM holds sway over a great percentage of voters who don’t read past the headlines. I hope this has legs but do acknowledge the history of the Clintons skating from criminal behavior.

Hope Galen’s got good security. And stays away from Arkansas and Fort Marcy Park.

I think the Chinese government could make out personal checks to Hillary’s campaign and the MSM would not care. Like someone said, everything about Hsu was phony except the money. Where did it come from?

I think a lot of people let x42 skate on this because they liked him. I don't think they feel the same way about Her Heinous.

why did Fred not get them years ago?

That is my primary beef with Fred. he let the thing slip through his fingers.

"Finally, someone willing to play hardball with the felons".

Yeah, well in 1996 he sure didn't get the job done, did he. I mean he was the big bad lawyer heading the Senate investigation of China-gate, from which absolutely nothing stuck on Hillary or Bill.

Fred needs to show he can take the fight to the Dims. You see Romney doing the same regularly and Rudi as well.

Here it comes. They’re going to say Fred’s being racist. “ ‘Are you suggesting we should have racially profiled Hsu because he’s Asian?’ Obama spokesman Bill Burton asked.”

Meanwhile, it’s a flattering photo of Hildabeest on the site. (not!)

In other news, she has this to say about Bubba...or perhaps it’s an old line about some hitman she employed?

“You know, I never knew how good he was until I had to do it myself.”

Perhaps you think Ron Paul will be more influential.

No. I don’t. Ron Paul isn’t likely to be our nominee either, though, so his shortcomings are less of a concern of mine.

I like Duncan Hunter the best of the candidates, but he’s failed to gain momentum, so, like Ron Paul, he’s not going to be the nominee.

There are things I like and things I dislike about Rudy, Romney and Fred. My state votes late, so my primary vote will likely be symbolic anyway. If it’s still a race I’ll make up my mind by then. If it’s effectively decided I’ll vote for Hunter.

I would certainly vote for any of three over Hillary. (Or Obama, or Edwards, or, especially Gore - who I think may end up being the nominee.)

“a rival presidential campaign said Tuesday.”

Funny that they emphasize that.

The other two I think are obvious. What do you dislike about Fred?
