Clinton Sees Fear Realized in Trouble With Donor
NY Times ^ | September 12, 2007 | PATRICK HEALY

Posted on 09/11/2007 9:29:43 PM PDT by neverdem

Of all the possible vulnerabilities facing Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign, Mrs. Clinton has long believed that the one of the biggest was money, friends and advisers say. Some sort of fund-raising scandal that would echo the Clinton-era controversies of the 1990s and make her appear greedy or ethically challenged.

As a result, Mrs. Clinton told aides this year to vet major donors carefully and help her avoid situations in which she might appear to be trading access for big money, advisers said. Also to be avoided, the senator said, were fund-raising tactics that might conjure up the Clinton White House coffees and the ties to relatively unknown donors offering large sums, like the Asian businessmen who sent checks to the Democratic National Committee.

Yet nine months into her campaign, Mrs. Clinton is grappling with exactly the situation she feared — giving up nearly $900,000 that had been donated or raised by Norman Hsu, a one-time fugitive and one of her top fund-raisers, whose actions raise serious questions about how well the campaign vetted its donors. As a result, Mrs. Clinton now finds herself linked to a convicted criminal who brought in tens of thousands of dollars from potentially tainted sources.

The Hsu case has revived ugly memories for voters about the Democratic fund-raising scandals when Bill Clinton was president, the senator’s campaign advisers acknowledge, a time...

--snip--

The campaign is refunding $850,000 to these donors, viewing the money as tainted. Yet the campaign is also risking another public relations mess by saying that it would take back the money if it clearly came from the donor’s bank account, not from Mr. Hsu or another source. The risk is that Mrs. Clinton will appear to want more cash no matter whether it was once colored by a disgraced donor...

And who were photographed with Mrs. Clinton on a number of occasions, after donating almost $1,000,000. OK.

She may not release the names to the public, but the FBI will get the names.

The FBI already has the names. This is a big problem for she who would be Queen.

Is the NYT behind Obama?

They’ve sure been hitting the Hsu stories hard and often.

It's placed on the front page again with minor story status. It also mentions similar woes for Edwards and Obama.

Interesting, coming from the NY Times. If the FBI uses waterboarding to extract information from Hsu, co-conspirators and participants, would the Times deride the method. /sarcasm

Yet the [Hillary] campaign is also risking another public relations mess by saying that it would take back the money if it clearly came from the donor’s bank account, not from Mr. Hsu or another source.

Given his business failures and such Mr. Hsu's source of such large sums to be passed on to Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) candidates have raised questions about the source of his funds.

The nytimes employees have endeavored mightily to find the other source. They telephoned some acquaintances of Mr. Hsu but alas none returned the nytimes employees' calls. What's a body to do? They did their best. They are professionals.

This is a transparent attempt by the New York Slimes to minimize the impact, by presenting Hillary as the victim of a nasty little Chinese crook....

I read it that way, too.

At least it’s on the Front Page. When the NY Times wants to bury a story, it is on page A34.

They know what she could do to the DNC if she loses the election (or is hounded by corruption scandals after taking office).

The prize isn’t about a single election, it is about continued viability (as well as incremental socialist goals like socialized medicine for all; things that are difficult to dismantle).

They’ve written a check and are letting persons from John Kerry’s office complete the handover. It should arrive sometime around 2014.

the Perfect Point.

The answer is that she is a fraud and simply a candidate of the PC crowd and economic deadbeats.

She is incapable but will promise to steal from the productive and give to the unproductive. The Communist version of Robin Hood.

If Hsu is alive 90 days from now, I’ll be amazed. That’s all I’m saying.

Hillary, after Vince Foster, you’ve got a lot more to be worried about that mere Chinese campaign donations.

One day your gig is up on that one. I still think Foster will one day be the reason you’ll be incarcerated at Levenworth, Kansas. Gain comfort that Bubba will be right beside you.

“They know what she could do to the DNC if she loses the election ..”

This is an important point.

Her Thighness is nothing if not VINDICTIVE!!!!

Mess with me and you are dead!!!

If she loses, the DNC will get thoroughly trashed, via talking heads, via leaked FBI files, via “found” records of prostitutes, via “found” pay-off checks and on and on and on.

Her Thighness is simply Al Capone writ large (ass).

Has anyone else noticed that the Clintonista arithmetic is off on these stories?? They keep reporting that $850,000 in donations are being returned to 260 donors. That would be approx. $3,270 per donor, which is well above the maximum per donor for the primary campaign, is it not????

Unless some of the donors contributed over multiple years?? I don’t know what all the rules are, but something seems fishy with those numbers. Also, not everyone gives the maximum of $2,300 or whatever it is, surely..... I wonder if all their numbers will add to something proper and legal.
