LAKELAND | It's not the big sit-down dinner and speech at the Yacht Club that local Republican Party planners had hoped for, but the former U.S. senator from Tennessee and now presidential candidate, Fred Thompson, will be in Lakeland at 11 a.m. Saturday to speak to those attending a gun show at The Lakeland Center.
Supporters said they hope he will return for a longer visit later in the campaign. But for now, Thompson, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, is on a three-day, whirlwind tour of the state beginning today and ending Saturday...
Thompson will be met at The Lakeland Center by state Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, who has endorsed his candidacy and is recruiting other elected Republicans to do the same.
The Thompson campaign trip will cover stops in Jacksonville, The Villages, Celebration, Miami, Cape Coral and New Port Richey today and Friday.
Saturday, his first stop will be The Lakeland Center, followed by an appearance at the University of Florida football game in Gainesville.
Despite the fact that it will the Florida-Tennessee game, Thompson will have a host of Florida supporters to greet him there, including state Rep. Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland, who has endorsed Thompson's campaign.

not all Gun Owners are for Fred, I got guns, and I dont care much for Fred.Methinks you are in a very tiny minority of gunowners considering the GOP alternatives. I'm a NRA Life Member and one of their certified Firearms Instructors. I can't wait for a bumpersticker that says Veterans for Fred so I can paste it over my current Veterans for Bush stickers that won't come off. Given the GOP alternatives and the Democrat HORRORS we face, I'll work my fingers to the bone as a FRED VOLUNTEER.
Put America Ahead: Vote for FRED!

The gun show management demands that all guns be unloaded and no loose rounds are allowed. You can carry your weapon, but it must be tied with a chamber block cord, before they let you in. Safety precaution, no loaded guns at the show. Makes good sense.
Who would think you would see a major Presidential candidate at a gun show.

What a sad country we've inherited where a pro-American, conservative prez candidate generates concern about his safety by standing up at a gun show in a southern state.

Florida law states the places you are not allowed to carry and does NOT give any one else the right to post their business off limits to CCW.

Okay I WAS for Duncan Hunter here in Florida. But they never contacted me after I volunteered. Florida is a critical state and they had zero infrastructure here. That tells me a lot. It tells me I'm about to go tilting at windmills...again. I was waiting for Fred anyway. Know why? Because Fred can WIN. He is electable and much as I like Duncan Hunter he is simply not electable. I like Fred on other issues, too. Sure Duncan Hunter is great on all those issues as well...but again....he is not electable. This election is too important to waste my vote. As far as Fred's antigun voting record....well I can't answer that. I still trust him and I guess that's the bottom line. But it's a risk I happily take and will stand by to the end.

And everyone is afraid of a lawsuit if loaded guns were allowed and some accident happened. There have been two accidents at Miami gun shows. In the first, IIRC about 15 years ago held at Dinner Key, there was a live round loaded into a vendors display gun and somebody pulled a trigger without first checking. He wasn't following RULE #1 (Muzzle in a safe direction) and a little kid caught a round thru the head and was killed. At the second, a vendor capped off a round into the concrete floor of the Dinner Key auditorium. That sealed the rule. It was one heckuva fight to even keep gunshows in Miami at all. I don't mind at all that I can't carry at a gun show. Even if a lefty nutcase went all VT (Virginia Tech) and opened fire are you gonna return fire in a dense crowd? Not me. I'm hugging the floor and low crawling my butt outta there. I couldn't live with myself if one of my returned rounds killed an innocent. And it's not like there is no help right there on site. Cops (even SWAT guys shopping) crawl over the whole place. I always feel safe at a gunshow.

“Will Fred pledge to do something about the ridiculous ammo prices at the show? And the dumbass ATF regs?”
I’d like to see the GHWB and Clinton-era Executive Orders on the subject gone, myself.
Ammo prices are being driven by a combination of the war and China’s increased consumption of brass.

Courtesy of On the Issues:
* Voted NO on background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
* Voted NO a second time on forcing background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
* Voted NO on a motion to allow only licensed dealers to sell at gun shows. (May 1999)
* Voted YES to kill an amendment forbidding dealers to sell a firearm without a trigger lock. (July 1998)
The NRA called him a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment. Charlton Heston campaigned for him.
The New York Sun reports, “Mr. Thompson’s relationship with gun-rights groups is sterling. A 2000 report from a campaign finance watchdog group, Common Cause, found that the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and the Georgia Gun Owners PAC donated $188,954 to Mr. Thompson between 1993 and 1999; the groups donated more only to Dr. Frist.”[43].
He believes that the second amendment refers to an individual, not collective, right.
Ping to y’all for more information.

Data from Gun Owners of America website Which is wildly distorted to give a negative view... I'm not sure why GOA has done that, as they seem generally happy with Thompson.
Blatant examples of distortion:
- "Government wiretapping of innocent citizens." - NSA surveillance of people suspected of having communications with foreign terrorists, not a gun rights issue
- "Anti-gun terror bill" - The Patriot Act, not a gun rights issue
- "Free Speech restrictions", "McCain's Incumbent Protection", Incumbent Protection (2002 failed filibuster) - Campaign finance reform votes, not about gun rights per se at all
- "Anti-gun Clinton judge appointment" - Anyone who complains that the 'rats are sitting on judicial appointments for political reasons should be ashamed to use this against Thompson
- "Anti-gun Surgeon General" - Since when does the Surgeon General have anything to do with gun rights?
A little more in-depth research will likely show the remaining "issues" are either distorted or over-stated as well. Thompson has been a consistent support of 2nd Amendment rights, and such "laundry lists" of out-of-context votes is unhelpful.
