Fred Thompson must be the luckiest guy in American politics he doesn't yet have a platform available on his web site, skips debates, waits for months before announcing under the assumed role of testing the waters, records videos on his web site and somehow manages to bring in impressive support from the American people.

I agree, it is bodies such as the CFR that can produce some of the best ideas at times, though most of the time it is more a mental exercise on the behalf of some academic in love with pie in the sky ideals. To me it signals that the individual is engaged in the issues at hand.
Fred's style leads one to think he is a bit superficial, and to be honest, I would agree, but under the straight forward talk there are well reasoned and thought out positions. Some times simplicity and brevity are a blessing.
I feel the same about Mitt's affiliation with the CFR as you do Fred and the AEI, it bumps him up a notch or two. Of course I have never disliked the guy anyways, but it is fun to yank back on a chain or 2.

Thompson has a couple of months to show his depth and we'll see if his simplistic style overlays a more sophisticated understanding of the issues, especially if he participates in some of the upcoming debates. I would hope a few of the second tier would drop out by then and give the major players a little more room to flesh things out one on one with each other.
I'm also of the opinion that Fred's "folksy" style (I think someone has to take a drink now) may be a bigger detriment than usual in 2008 and may put off moderates and independents looking for more sophisticated analysis. I hear a lot of talk here in Missouri about needing someone with more substance (i.e. no more cowboys) and less awshucks. Missouri is increasingly leaning DEM now, and I am beginning to think that the "Southern factor" is going to hurt a Republican nominee such as Thompson or Huckabee.
Have you heard things like this in your area?

Well I donât know that Mississippi would be a good gauge of how his style is being perceived. But I think it will go over well for the most part, IF he comes off more as “just one of us” instead of the bravado you mention.

What an obnoxious disparagement of your own father.
You need to read this article.

Some say Thompson is too old, but frankly, on those rare occasions when Ive been lucky enough to stumble into true wisdom in this world - it has never come out of anyone any younger than Thompson.

She’ll even stoop to trashing her own father!
That’s just vile.
Too bad her dad couldn’t pass his class on.

OK, we are on the same page.
I happen to think that Romney’s and Obama’s paired essay in Foreign Affairs is a good proof that CFR is more debating society than a deep conspiratorial society.
Romney is following the Ronald Reagan “peace through strength” model, Obama is following the Jimmy Carter school of “peace through appeasing bullies” model. Their essays expressed these views.
Diametrically opposed. Yet they are both “CFR”.
USing CFR as a whipping boy is like saying Clarence Thomas and Clinton are part of an elitist conspiracy because they both went to Yale. And missing the point that most pro-UN global-govt types dont need a secret society to make their views known, they do it openly. Just check out the Democratic platform from 2004! UN runs our foreign policy, illegals get amnesty, we sign up for ICC and Kyoto and LOST, and let our soldiers wear the blue helmets, etc.

I think non-FR members might have freeped your poll. Did you see how they ranked Romney and Paul?
Of course Freepers think Thompson/Hunter is the ticket. Those non-members?....well we don’t know who told them to come here and vote. But we can guess.
