25 Senate Democrats Support "Betray Us," Including Hillary
Captain's Quarters ^ | September 20, 2007 | Ed Morrissey

The Senate passed the Jon Cornyn amendment condemning the MoveOn.org ad that called General David Petraeus a liar and potential traitor, 72-25. All 25 Senators who voted in support of these smears against an American military commander that they unanimously promoted to four stars came from the Democratic Party. It includes two declared presidential candidates and the top leadership of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

Those who voted to support MoveOn's smear:

NAYs ---25

Akaka (D-HI)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Brown (D-OH)
Byrd (D-WV)
Clinton (D-NY)
Dodd (D-CT)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Levin (D-MI)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Murray (D-WA)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Sanders (I-VT)
Schumer (D-NY)
Stabenow (D-MI)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Wyden (D-OR)

It's a particularly sad commentary on the Democratic Party that they cannot bring themselves to support the very commander they sent to lead American troops in battle by a unanimous vote. It's not a case of a few fringe politicians like Bernie Sanders or Barbara Boxer, either. The Majority Leader, Harry Reid, and his chief deputy, Dick Durbin, refused to condemn the smear on Petraeus' honor. Hillary Clinton and Chris Dodd, both of whom want to become Commander in Chief over the military, chose to endorse MoveOn's smear campaign against a man who has dedicated his life to defending this nation and serving presidents in a nonpartisan manner.

MoveOn has the right to free speech. Congress has the responsibility to defend the honor of the man they unanimously endorsed for the difficult task of bringing security to Iraq. Almost half of the Democratic caucus would rather participate in a smear campaign against the commander than stand up to MoveOn. It's a pathetic, embarrassing, and ultimately revealing moment.

UPDATE: Mitt Romney's response sums it up:

"Hillary Clinton had a choice. She could stand with our troop commander in Iraq, or she could stand with the libelous left wing of her party. She chose the latter. The idea that she would be a credible commander-in-chief of our armed forces requires the willing suspension of disbelief."

UPDATE: Greg Sargent at TPM Election Central takes the glass-half-full approach ... almost literally. I guess (less than) half of the Democrats is better than none.

That list needs to be in national TV ads, newspaper ads, and on billboards all over the country. It’s past time for these traitors to be given full credit for their words in front of the American people. In fact, an ad showing the heroism of our soldiers should be on one side of the ad and these traitors faces and words on the other. The hollowness and hypocrisy of their claim that “we support the troops” has never been more evident. They’re anti-military; anti-American and none of them should be serving this country in any capacity.

And all 25 Senators are stupid.

Also, I wonder what an investigation of Harry Reid in Nevada would bring?

This is why I don’t worry that Hillary will be the next president. She will let her arrogance get the best of her. She will have her “Dean” moments and bring herself down. Her loathing of the military and alignment with this moonbat Soros gang will amount to a self-inflicted Swift boating. We still have over a year and lots of revealing moments that will continue to remind the country that she cannot be allowed to become president. I am thrilled that she voted her heart on this one.

The bigger news here might be the relatively large number of Dim Senators who did NOT support MoreOn.org.

Am I missing something or was this just supposed to be a feel good measure that didn’t do anything? “Senate Condemns MoveOn.org”, great, but who cares? What does that have to do with governing?

It sure would be nice if they spent this much time on stuff that matters rather than trying to look good in front of the base (goes for both sides).

As disgusting and sickening as this is, are any of us here actually surprised?

The Democratic party no longer even pays lip service to the notion that is does this out of “idealism”, misguided or otherwise.

The Democrats have a new Congressional Caucus — the Betray Us Caucus.

Looks like could be more Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) members hate the military of the United States of America than Carter has lily-liver pills.

This is my prayer “dear Lord, you said that vengeance is yours to repay - I earnestly ask that you repay all those who have defamed the good and honorable name of General David Petraeus. Please do so quickly and with justice only you can accomplish, Lord”. Amen.

Barak Ubama did not vote even though he was present and lobbying for a different version of this resolution. What a feckless crapweasel. He drizzles wimpiness. He spews socialism.
Well said.

25, 24 DemonRats plus "independent" Sanders. 3 DemonRats did not vote, at least 2 of those probably would have voted against the resolution, and thus against the General.

still 24 of 46 is more than half of the "Rats" voting. Even if you give them Independent Democrat Lieberman, it's still more than half of the 'Rats voting, give them Sanders, who caucuses with them as does Lieberman else they'd not be the majority, and it's 25 of 47, still more than half, of the voting Democrats who voted to further "dis" General Petraeus

Zero Republicans out of 49 voted to kick the Armed Forces of the United States in the a$$. They truly do "loath the military", almost as much ss they loathe GW Bush.

Maria Cantwell (D WA) did not vote, but I have no doubt she would have voted the liberal party line.

Certainly Obama would have done so as well. Biden, probably him too, although maybe not quite as likely. If all three had voted against the resolution, that would make 27 of the 49 Senate Rats, or counting the two independents as 'Rats, which Sanders is pretty much and Lieberman is except on the war, would make it 28 of 51.

WOW! A majority of the majority voting so blatantly for a treasonous position.

I don't know if my old CO (reserve type) would have believed that, even though he's been calling the Dems "The Party of Treason" since the '60s.

Well, most of 'em agree with MoveOn, even those who didn't vote with them. But you know MoveOn has 'em by the short and curlies, in this case by the campaign war chest.

Well, no surprise. Hillary is a member of the “Betray U.S.” party. The Democrat Party. The pander to the masses party.

If this can be sufficiently publicized, which will be difficult with the MSM running interference, this might, might that is, sink her Heinousness' chance of every becoming President.

Obama obviously didn't have the courage of his convictions, but by not voting he's shown himself to be weak and probably didn't help his chances any either. Hillary will use that against him in the primaries, although probably not all that openly, but then she's good at "behind the scenes" dirty tricks.

Now we just need a really strong, but also a real conservative, Republican candidate to pillory Hillary.
