Alright, I am at a loss and am posting my first real vanity post.
Stupid I know so try to go easy. I am trying to identify a giant hornet or bee. This thing has been hanging out on our outside light for at least 2 evenings. Tonight I had my better half take photos.
In looking at forums, I haven't really been able to identify this other than the frightening Asian Giant Hornet. I really don't want this to be that as it would have a tendency to really freak me out.
Whatever this is is about 2 inches long and at least one of its kind is active in the evening.
For some really cool pics of the monster - see here: http://www.usflagballoon.com/2007season/hornetorbee.htm

They made a movie about it. They embellished it a bit....it’s called Snakes on a Plane.

Curious what you have makes an appearance right around when all the honeybees zero out.
Nuke it from orbit, only way to be sure!
I worked in a machine shop when we learned to use Gunk... At first we tried WD40 and a lighter, but that was really too dangerous, what with solvent tanks and parts washers around. The Gunk kills the critters within about 5 minutes or so, sometimes less, depending on how much of the stuff you hit them with. It also dissolves the exoskeletons, but not as fast as the wings.

I had one in my (finished, ‘man cave’) basement a few years ago. It sounded like a helicopter and took a half can of Raid to kill.
A pack of those things abducted my neighbor, we haven’t seen her since....
I sprayed a large insect like that about a month ago. My son told me they had seen them at work and were told they were an Asian type insect that traveled to the USA in wood. They are killing honey bee’s and other insects. It was the largest hornet type bug I had ever seen. The stinger was really big.
It looks like the Asian Giant Hornet.
Looks like a yellow jacket to me... the only time I’ve ever been stung was by one.. and MAN did it hurt.

I am a moth collector. It is a giant Hornet. And, yes, for some reason, they come out quite a bit at night - especially in late simmer. They are one of the banes of my existence as I have half a dozen huge lights in my yard - designed to attract moths. I despise these guys. When I go out to check the lights, there are always 1 or 2 around them (by the end of August).
I can’t spray them because it would kill the moths too. If I were you, I’d spray the dam thing.
I also find that staying up all night depletes their energy. And, many times, bu morning, they are weak & dying.
It’s NOT a Cicada killer. Those are much more black with bits of yellow.
I think I stand corrected... according to the marks, from chrisser, it would appear to be identical to the Giant European Hornet.. compared to your photo..

I had them too this year. LOTS of them. They lasted about a month. Came out of nests in the ground.
One night three of the hornets got into my house. Those buggers are hard to kill.
I haven't seen any this year.
Japanese Hornet. Don’t get stung!
They are all over southwest VA [and my property]. I actually watched in amazement as one of them killed and then carried off a cicada three times it’s size from Thomas Jefferson’s plantation home in Poplar Forest.
About two weeks ago a group of them attacked a bunch of cicadas that had congretated near the porch light on my back deck. It was brutal....and efficient.
So, the next night, I set my bug zapper out. Because these bees, hornets, whatever are so big, I had to cut some of the hard plastic exterior that blocked them from getting to the juice.
The next morning, my bug zapper was filled full of’em.
