GOV TAKING LICENSE WITH ALIEN-DRIVER ID
NEW YORK POST ^ | September 22, 2007 | KENNETH LOVETT

Posted on 09/22/2007 6:01:01 AM PDT by kellynla

September 22, 2007 -- ALBANY - Gov. Spitzer announced yesterday that illegal immigrants will get driver's licenses - but at a cost to legal citizens because they'll now be useless as airport ID. Spitzer said the state would no longer require a Social Security number or proof that a person is not eligible for such a number in order to qualify for a driver's license.

That change clashes with the 2005 REAL ID law passed by Congress that states require, among other things, a Social Security number in order to get a license. States have until December 2009 to be in compliance.

States that fail to meet the standards will lose their certification by the Department of Homeland Security, meaning that driver's licenses in those states will no longer be valid for air travel, entry to federal facilities and for tax purposes.

Travelers will now have to carry a second form of ID, like a passport, which was met with criticism yesterday.

"To outright dismiss the security needs of our state and nation and provide illegal aliens documentation is dangerous and inconceivable," said Sen. Dale Volker (R-Depew).

"Gov. Spitzer should not view New York state driver's licenses like baseball cards - handing them out just to score political points."

Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.), the ranking member on the House Committee on Homeland Security, said: "I strongly disagree with giving state-authorized IDs to illegal immigrants. More importantly, this proposal raises serious homeland-security concerns."

New York is the eighth state to give licenses to undocumented aliens.

When I recently bought car insurance, the insurance company didn’t ask if I had a driver’s license. I thought that was weird. A couple years later, they called and asked if I had gotten a driver’s license yet and what the number was. They said that they wouldn’t drop me or increase my rates if I didn’t get a license. Perhaps that’s state law or something. Even unlicensed illegal-alien drivers need and can get insurance, apparently at the licensed citizen driver rates.

In NJ...all of the illegals never bother with licenses or insurance

all that is required is the lib/dem politicians requiring all the tax payers to support them!!!

What the Lefties want is these illegals to be able to go to the DMV, apply for a drivers license and then go to the next window and REGISTER TO VOTE...all in one swoop!

The spanish language newspapers and tv stations are lauding this as a tremendous victory for “immigration” rights. The next step is to demand the right to vote without being citizens and the right to schools in your own language. Weare headed that way one way or another. The elites have already decided where they are headed. Don’t forget that our mr. Bush is also in fovor of such solutions. The rest of us be dammed.

I have noted that any attacks on the president have been grounds for suspension in recent weeks. My friend “rytwyng” was suspended for as much.

They can celebrate but it won’t last long. Eventually in the next year or two the REAL ID will have to be legislated or we won’t be able to board planes or do much of anything else with our license. Not even the illegal alien ivory tower mouthpieces at the NY Times or Wall St. Journal will stand for that very long.

They just got that in NY.

>> and the right to schools in your own language. <<

They’ve had that since the 1970s, including with the heavy-handed insistence of George Bush. Very few Texans with Spanish surnames heard a word of ENglish in Bush-era Texas.

I didn't see any (personal) attacks on anyone, nor any "comment removed" notations. Still scratcin' my head.

If you search kellynla posts, there are a couple posts on 9/20 that qualify. Anyway, that seems to be the constant in my humble opinion.

Unfortunately, New York State, despite being “progressive”, doesn’t have the recall option for state officials.

We ought to deny New York State federal funding for everything. No state should accept New York State licenses.

Yeah, that sucks for New York residents. I am a former Upstate New York residents. When I came to Arizona, I got my permit by showing my New York State permit.

Now I guess any New York State identification will be useless as identification, especially in Arizona, which requires proof of legal status for ID cards. I certainly glad to live in AZ now. Taxes are lower than NYS.

Well that doesn't help me one bit as MY drivers lisence is a NY State license!! As I said before I didn't vote for this idiot and I imagine that most who did do not agree with this moronic move on his part. There has to be something we NYers who care about our national security (and immigration laws)can do to get it revoked.

However, I believe that the problem for any foreigner, legal or not, isn't with driving as such --- it's insurance.

Nope...it's about voting.

The state Senate may overturn this imbecile's pea brain decision but I don't know about the Assembly. Our only hope will probably be if and when they pass REAL ID legislation or if enough people in NYC start screaming loud about it.
