Ron Paul: Highways claim more than 9/11 killed
Baltimore Sun ^ | 9/22/07 | Rick Pearson

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul contends that the federal government has overreacted by limiting personal freedom in the wake of terrorist attacks six years ago, noting more people die on U.S. highways in less than a month’s time compared to the number who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

“We have been told that we have to give up our freedoms in order to be safe because terrorism is such a horrible event,” Paul said today to more than 1,000 supporters who attended a rally at a downtown Chicago hotel ballroom.

“A lot fewer lives died on 9/11 than they do in less than a month on our highways, but once again, who owns the highways? Do we own the highways? No. It’s a government institution you know. …We need to put all this in perspective.”

More than 2,970 people were reported dead in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Federal highway traffic statistics show an average of 3,509 people a month were killed on the nation’s highways in 2001.

Rupaul gets further in the hole every time he opens his mouth.

I would agree with you and Ron Paul that the federal government is the greater threat when you provide clear and compelling evidence that the federal government is crashing airplanes into public buildings killing thousands of American Citizens.

I can't provide you with proof of something which I (and Ron Paul, as he has clearly stated more that once) am convinced did not occur.

Loss of liberty at the hands of our federal government does not have to take the form of crashing planes into buildings, and has not done so. But you understood that.

Yeah this is a standard gripe of libertarians - the loss of civil liberties due to the WOT.

I do hear a lot of chatter about this from dim witted kids and such, but when I ask exactly what rights have been taken away from them personally, and how their lives have been adversely affected, in real life, they sputter and stammer.

When I tell them to stop repeating what the MSM has told them to think, and answer the question directly, they are generally speechless.

Thats it, you keep drinking the kool aid.

But fear not, since I have seen how well you follow orders, I will tell you what to do.

Cease being ruled by dogma and authorities. - Look at the world and think!

I agree that this was not a good way to make his point. Too bad that his entire speech, which according to the comments to the posted story was well received by a good audience, was eclipsed by this one unnecessary remark.

Tell that to the 3000+ Americans who lost their lives on 9/11. I’m quite sure they will agree with you that the federal government is the greater threat.

BTW, you’ll love your liberty under Sharia Law. You’ll be free to do anything you want as long as it’s specifically approved in the Koran.

Yeah, well everyone dies of something, Ron. Does that mean we shouldn’t concern ourselves with terrorism?

By the way... How would you have responded to Pearl Harbor?

These kids who think that Bush is taking us down the road of “fascism” don’t have a clue about what fascism really is. For starters, the real fascists (the Nazis and Mussolini’s Italian Fascists) were Leftist socialists.

Do you think Ron Paul would have responded to Pearl Harbor? After all, at that time Hawaii was not an American State. It was a territory where we had ships based. If we weren’t there then the Japanese wouldn’t have been mad with us. So fast forward today. Should we give up all territories worldwide and withdraw? Are all American bases to be no longer defended since they might be provocative to someone?

Hey. Texas A&M rocks.

I would send my kids to it in about 15 years if things remain the same, and there are not many colleges that I would say that about.

I don’t care for Ron Paul at all, but I do respect Texas A&M. Thanks for the post. - bill

BTW, you’ll love your liberty under Sharia Law.

There you expose the weakness of your position.

We will never have Sharia law in this country UNLESS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MANDATES IT. You slander our military, our police, and our citizens by even suggesting that such a thing could happen.

Especially in Texas. Here people have guns and are not afraid to (in fact they like to) use them. No terrorists are ever going to impose their lifestyle on us.

Now in some other places .... Where are you from?

Yep. When I explain to them that the very word NAZI means National Socialist German Workers' Party - they just get a vacant look in their eyes, signifying that they have just heard something that they never knew.

The implications of this type of awakening cannot be undervalued.

“Do you think Ron Paul would have responded to Pearl Harbor?”

Pretty much the way the Pearl Harbor conspiracy theorists have responded. ‘It was a conspiracy’. ‘We made them attack us when we cut off trade’. Etc.

“So fast forward today. Should we give up all territories worldwide and withdraw? Are all American bases to be no longer defended since they might be provocative to someone?”

I think Ron Paul is on record starting that all US troops should be withdrawn to the US. I guess if he were a football coach, he would forbid his team from crossing the fifty yard line, ie, outside their own territory.
