In switch, NRA eyeing role in GOP primaries (Might endorse Fred!)
The Washington Times ^ | September 25, 2007 | Joseph Curl

The National Rifle Association, which did not endorse President Bush in 2000 and 2004 until just a month before the general election, is considering stepping into the presidential campaign fray early next year during the primary season, the group's chief lobbyist says.

While the NRA waited until October in each of the past two presidential election years before endorsing a candidate, the group plans to take a more high-profile role early in the 2008 Republican nomination process.

"Historically, we have not gotten involved in primaries. We traditionally wait until after the conventions," said Chris Cox, head lobbyist for the NRA. "That being said, given the candidates and the process and the front-loading of the primaries, it is a possibility that we could get involved in one of these presidential primaries."

Republican presidential hopefuls know of the 4-million-member group's power. On Friday, they paraded before 500 lifetime NRA members at a conference in Washington, each making a pitch for why they are the best candidate to protect the rights of gun owners.

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who earned an "A" rating from the NRA during his time in the Senate, was the group's favorite. Meanwhile, the GOP front-runner, Rudolph W. Giuliani, left members underwhelmed.

"He's a flip-flopper," said Ed Hanson of Wisconsin, shortly after listening to the former New York City mayor's speech at the Capital Hilton. "He should say one thing and stick with it. Say what you mean and stand by it. He hasn't done that. And that's a problem — a huge problem."

Interviews with a dozen others who attended the star-studded event — all lifetime members, some wearing NRA hats, others in camouflage gear — found a consensus: Mr. Giuliani is not their man...(continued)

This would be a huge lift for Fred`s campaign. The NRA realizes the seriousness of this primary season and stopping a lying liberal from getting the GOP nomination is critical. Rooty's an anti-gun, gun grabbing authoritarian and can’t be trusted.

Go Fred go!

Who are you to call someone stupid? You are afraid of a think tank which has Angelina Jolie as a member.

"You don't support the Second Amendment; you LIVE the Second Amendment"

Good move, NRA.

This would be seismic.

I wonder how the MSM will spin this.

FNC is 100% predictable. They will take a yankees lose approach. “Guiliani lost the radical NRA endorsement today. it went to somebody else we can’t name.”

NYC Effete Elites will circle the waggons.

He seems no more capable of winning the nomination than Alan Keyes.

In December of 1999, Dr. Keyes was competing for last place with Orrin Hatch. Five weeks later, he had finished strongly in Iowa and earned one of the proverbial three tickets to New Hampshire.

This fight has barely begun. Not a single ballot will be cast for many months.

Conservatives need to stop listening to the gatekeepers in the Democrat Media and in the party and start listening very, very carefully to what the candidates are really saying.

If they can find the wisdom do that, they will discover that when it comes to real policy, and real principle, Alan Keyes stands head and shoulders above ANYONE in this race.

I’d be a lot less worried of this “think tank” if there were no politicians as members.

The NAU could almost work if Messico were excluded. Logic would dictate that having three “partners”, two having nearly the same standard of living and one being a corrupt cesspool will create untold problems.

This could be very good news to those that feel Rudy is watering down the Republican party and forcing it away from its social conservative politics.

Let’s move NRA.

Come on rellimpank, don't be so hard on yourself. If you think about it, you actually hve the same chance of being the nominee as Ron Paul!

Merely pointing out the obvious... the extreme imbalance between Messico and her two northern neighbors.

Sorry if I offended you...but if another poster wants to call me “crazy”... at least they should ping me.

They have been debating this crap for years, especially after NAFTA. There will be bits that work and bits that don’t. The crap will go way and the stuff of benefit will stay in the long run. But it is not a North American Union in the vein of the EU. Not going to happen...

Quit being paranoid, we have real windmills to tilt at...

I was referring to crazy in a broad sense, as in people who fear the CFR.

Fear of MEXICO being brought into some form of union with the US outside of trade and a bit of security cooperation (which would be a good thing for a number of reasons IMHO)is at this time over the top. There will be no EU style arrangement on this Continent. There is no advantage to it for all the players. The EU succeeded because every country there basically sucked, so it "helped" everyone.
