Isn’t it custom to continue referring to them as presidents? Seems like that is generally the rule for senators and such as well.

Sometimes they do use former titles as a courtesy, as in “Mayor” Giuliani or “Governor” Romney. What gets me is that the MSM usually refers to the current POTUS as “Bush” rather than “President Bush”.
