UNITED NATIONS, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - Iran has completed creation of the nuclear fuel cycle and its nuclear dossier is closed now, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday as he spoke as part of a general political discussion at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.

Ahmadinejad indicated that his country was constantly subjected to accusations, military threats and illegal sanctions over the past two years, but now it has been recognized as a country having a nuclear fuel cycle for civilian purposes.

From the Iranian angle of view, its nuclear dossier has been closed and has turned into a routine issue in the format of the International Atomic Energy Agency, he said.

On the one hand, he’s a nutjob running a totalitarian regime, but on the other hand, why burn oil to make electricity when you can sell it for $70 a barrel instead?

A nuc power plant for electricity does not use re-processed uranium. Different uses.

He’s learned from the example of North Korea-just lie about it and no one will care. There’s no question now that he’s on the road to nuclear capability and the world will probably just look the other way. Choosing to be reactive rather than pro-active guarantees a nuclear war. WWII taught the world nothing.

They could have had nuclear electricity without all the stuff they are building - most countries with nuclear power generation don’t do enrichment or reprocessing. In fact they are not even building a real nuclear power-generation plant. Its all for either uranium-enrichment or making plutonium.

Everything they are doing, just like the NK’s, is building exactly what you would need to have to make nuclear weapons.

I have been getting very frustrated with the lefties on this point.

Typical light-water reactor designs require low-enriched uranium.

US Navy propulsion reactors, as I understand it, use highly-enriched, bomb-grade uranium.

The CANDU heavy-water design can use un-enriched uranium, but has a drawback for nuclear proliferation due to the fact that fuel can be pushed through the core on any schedule, permitting the fuel to be pulled out when plutonium content has peaked without shutting down the reactor. That’s how India got their nukes as I recall, from a CANDU-type system.

I think the US is the only nuclear-electricity nation that DOES NOT do reprocessing.

If you don’t reprocess, you have to figure out what to do with all the spent fuel for the next few million years.

Not true.

There are very few real reprocessing sites. Plenty of countries get along without them, sending their fuel abroad for reprocessing, like Spain and Taiwan.

We can discuss Iran’s nuclear program until they pop a bomb. By that time it will be to late to do much about it. We either take them out now or plan to live with the consequences.

I guess I got tripped up on the distinction between “do reprocessing” and “reprocess.”
