Memphis leads U.S. in violent crime
The Commercial Appeal (Memphis) ^ | September 27, 2007 | Christopher Conley

The Memphis metropolitan area, after coming in second last year, tops this year's ranking of metro areas by the rate of violent crime -- homicide, rape, aggravated assault and robbery.

In 2006, according to crime numbers released by the FBI, the eight-county Memphis metropolitan area recorded 1,262.7 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, the highest rate in the nation.

Last year, the Florence, S.C., metropolitan statistical area had the highest violent crime rate in the country. Memphis came in second with 1,197 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. And that was up from 1,132 in 2004.

A dying city, suffering from corrupt leadership and high taxes; run by Democrats.

Can anyone name a high-violent crime area that is NOT a Democrat stronghold?

“1,262.7 violent crimes per 100,000 residents,”

My little town in MS has a rate of 980.9 per 100,000. Doing our best to catch Memphis.

This follows the same line as a thread a week or so ago. Memphis was discussed as being a tourist destination. I’ve never been there and now I don’t want to go there either.

I lived there once, so glad and lucky to get out. Roving gangs are like an infestation of insects. What memphis needs is a good exterminator.

MEMPHIS, TENN.

TOTAL POPULATION: 652,640 BLACK POPULATION: 307,702 (47 percent) MEDIAN FAMILY INCOME: $14,039 BLACK MEDIAN FAMILY INCOME: $9,237

Tennessee’s largest city lies on a bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River in much the same way that the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, for which it is named, lay on the Nile River. But the challenges facing Memphis are uniquely its own. Gains for Blacks here have been hard-fought and hard-won. Undeniably, the problems facing the city are sizeable, but there are more Black problem solvers than ever before. Rep. Harold Ford (D.-Memphis) is in his eighth term as congressman of the Ninth Congressional Distribt comprised solely of Memphis. Within the past four years, four Blacks have been appointed as directors of major city departments, including police, housing, treasury and personnel. Director of Police James Ivy says, “The mere fact that I am where I am today is one of the major accomplishments.” Memphis also has four Black city council members and four Black county commissioners. This year, construction was begun on the National Civil Rights Museum to e erected at the site of the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was assassinated.

Director of Police James Ivy says, “The mere fact that I am where I am today is one of the major accomplishments.”

Someone needs to educate Director Ivy and enlighten him to the "mere fact" that simply being black and filling the position are meaningless in the overall scheme of things. It's what you do with the position that counts. You know, as Dr. King said "judge by content of character, not color of skin". It's comments like his that keep racism alive and well. Clearly, he fell right out of the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton playbook.

Given the crime stats in Memphis, I don't think I'd be bragging about being Director of Police.....regardless of my race.....

It is safer in Baghdad.

We need to pull out of Memphis, LA, Detroit, Cincy, St. Louis, Nawlins .... on and on and on ...immediately. there is no hope ....

democrapism/liberalism/socialism (same thing) running amok.

Someone answer this simple question? After a 100 years of democrat rule, shouldn't’t a city be utopia and spilling over with wealth? That is what the democrats claim! Our war on poverty ....40 year and 7 trillion dollars and yet we don’t pull out?????? A tiger is a tiger. A moron is a moron......

We are having an election in Memphis soon. We could get rid of most crime by just jailing the criminals that are running for office.

Memphis would be Democrat/socialist utopia if that darn Constitution wasn’t in the way stopping the Rats enacting all their Utopian ideals.

“Rep. Harold Ford (D.-Memphis) is in his eighth term as congressman of the Ninth Congressional Distribt”

Ahhhhhhhhhh no...

MR Harold Ford has not been a US Congressman since Nov 2006...

He left his office to run for the US Senate...Republican Bob Corker beat him...

His little breother Jakie ran in the Nov 2006 congressional ran in his place and lost...

Only one Ford is in office at present...Aunt Ophelia Ford is a TN State Senator and is due to float out of there in a sea of booze and drugs at any time...

Wait, she’s a Ford...She’ll be there and pickled forever...

I was a Mormon missionary in Memphis in the late '80s. There were definitely some scary parts of town where you just did not go.

One really funny thing was that our apartment got broken into at some point, but nothing was stolen. Apparently, the would-be burglars didn't know how little Mormon missionaries have in the way of possessions. I guess they didn't want to steal any copies of The Book of Mormon. LOL!
