Q: why did you choose to be here tonight and what of those who didn’t show.

Huckabee: I’m embarrassed for our party (re: those not showing). We have a long way to go. I’m honored to be here. I wished all the candidates had come.

Paul: I’m here because I was invited. I like to talk about freedom and the constitution. The purpose of the govt is to protect life and liberty, protect the fruits of your labor. Not policing the world but taking care of the people at home.

Brownback: I apologize for the candidate that aren’t here. It’s a disgrace. Expand the base, not narrow. I’m sorry to you. Register Republican and vote for one of the six of us.

Tancredo: I made a commitment on your (Tavis’) show. I was the only Republican who showed up at the NAACP event. The promise of America drives me.

Hunter: when family members don’t show at a reunion, we talk about them (laughter). How we leave Iraq in victory. Border on fire with massive narcotics and people traficking. Talks of his 6 year old grandson.

Keyes: defends absent colleagues (tongue in cheek?), who didn’t show up at the Values Voters debate either. Keyes is barred from debate in Michigan.

I predict that Ron Paul will be the big favorite of the audience. Hunter will not be doing himself any good.

This crowd is probably more conservative then the crowd that isn’t here

Could be but it is a meaningless "debate". What we need is a real debate amongst the top tier candidates. let the bottom dwellers have their "debate". Whatever.

“It is BECAUSE of his numbers that he’s stuck with this crowd”

I know, it wasn’t a very clear statement by me, I was just expressing a sense of sadness at it all.

This can’t be easy for Duncan Hunter, he may not have the numbers but he really shouldn’t be stuck with this crowd.

Think again. Duncan/Tanc/Paul will all do well on the illegals issue. I believe that the new jobs increase that was just reported is due to so many illegals going back to South America and to Central America and Mexico. It has created many thousands of jobs for American citizens who took those jobs we were told that "Americans just don't want". And blacks have suffered more than anyone else from the competition of low wages paid to illegals and the Spanish-only workplaces.

He’ll win the after debate straw polls I am sure, and he seems to have brought a vocal group of supporters again.

I doubt that immigration will be seen the same way. It is seen by many as an example of Reps being bigots and racists.

It is BECAUSE of his numbers that he’s stuck with this crowd.

Huh? This audience seems to be mostly black Republicans. Exactly what is wrong with trying to get their votes anyway?

Q: Your legacy on race?

Huckabee: cites Eisenhower’s role. Talks of diffences of justice, health care.

Paul: a freer society will take care of blacks and whites equally. Individual rights. Repeal most federal laws on drugs, tremendous improvement. Prosperity serves everybody. Property rights. Industrial-military complex.

Brownback: rebuilding the family, core of my campaign. Symbols are important, open the African museum of culture and history. Official apology from us governemnt for slavery and segregation.

Tancredo: cites Reagan. Opportunities for every American. Stop illegal immigration which surpresses wages. Enforce our laws.

Hunter: calm hand of Eisenhower brought about desegregation. Civil rights act passed with greater majority of Republicans than Democrats. Less regulation, less taxation, Jack Kemp’s rising tide lifts all boats.

Keyes: Remind people that there isn’t this deep divide. We are part of one nation, one community. The core of the community is not race, but endowed by our creator with inalienable rights. Education of our young, empowers every parent to choose schools that best reflect their values.
