Thompson says he aims to bring country back to roots
The Marshalltown Times-Republican ^ | October 02, 2007 | Ryan Brinks

Posted on 10/02/2007 8:04:06 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Though America got where it is today by following a pattern of freedom and prosperity followed, Americans at a present political crossroads may be in danger of choosing instead a path that leads to inevitable demise, said Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson Monday in Marshalltown.

Thompson, however, advocated adhering to the country’s foundational principles and doing what is right.

“How often, when you do the right thing, it turns out to be good politics too?” he said to a full room at the Tremont on Main.

At the core of his campaign, Thompson said he stands behind a federalism based on the Declaration of Independence’s assertion that individual rights come from God, not government, and the Constitution’s separation of powers.

“I always ask myself, ‘Does government have any business doing something,’” he said.

Thompson also delved into the hot topics of the day, including illegal immigration, taxes and war.

He noted that the United States now allows twice as many immigrants as it did in the early 1990s but emphasized the need for secure borders.

“We all know the wonderful contributions we’ve received from us being a country with open borders. ... From a legal standpoint, we’re still an open and generous nation,” he said. “... But a nation that cannot or will not secure its borders will not remain a sovereign nation. ... Is it going to make it better to become more and more dependant on illegal immigration?”

On taxes, Thompson said the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 worked and that Congress should continue to offer cuts in the future. What is not working, he said, is the unfair estate tax and unrestrained government spending.

“We’re spending the money of our children and grandchildren who are not even born yet and don’t have a seat at the table,” he said.

He advocated too opening up the health care system to more freedom, choice, personal responsibility and competition rather than plans too heavily relying on employers. The result would be the same quality care at lower costs, he said.

And on the war in Iraq, he said the nation’s greatest need is not to get out as soon as possible but to show the world that America is not weak and fundamentally not divided.

“We need to send the message that we’re willing and able to do what’s necessary on any front,” he said. “... The cause was just, we were just not prepared for what we found there.”

Thompson has made unity, along with security and prosperity, a priority in his campaign for the White House.

“We have a heritage, a history of honorably sacrificing for the greater good,” he said. “We’ve shed more blood for other peoples than any other nation, and we’re proud of that.”

But being the world’s greatest nation comes with responsibility, he also said.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but what has he said about the attack on Rush?

"Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?"

Unity with what?

Canada and Mexico.

Security and Prosperity Partnership (2005) --> North American Union (2010)

And you base this ridiculous theory on Thompson's membership in the CFR, while ignoring that Romney is a member, too.

Oh, and just for you and you Mittwit friends, here's Romney's lame non-defense (and tacit condemnation) of Limbaugh, which he saw fit to deliver via spokesman to the Huffington Post:

"Governor Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military. There may be disagreements with individual opinions, but no one would ever dispute the fact that those members of the military who disagree with the war have earned the right to express that opinion." [emphasis mine]

WE have been a nation with relatively open borders over the last two hundred years for LEGAL immigrants.

No, we haven't. My mother and her family legally immigrated to America years ago. They had to have a sponsor to get in to insure they wouldn't become a burden on society should the adults become unemployed. It wasn't easy to get here or get in. Other family members who tried years before were denied for health reasons.

Lose the open borders mantra. It's false to those of us who know and Fred made a telling slip of the tongue as to his real agenda.

No, I base it on Fred’s own words.

The Beatles' White Album is also speaking directly to you. And if you play "Stairway to Heaven" backwards it gives directions to Willard's next Powerpoint presentation.

You've been too busy misrepresenting Thompson to have noticed, I'm sure.

Thompson has addressed the Rush situation, here:

Thanks for the comment from Fred, I didn't see it anywhere else and I was starting to worry about it. This is great, I especially like the "loony left" phrase!

:) — no problem, I just ran across it myself. I liked the “looney left” comment, too — it made me laugh and laugh to hear a presidential candidate using the term.

"This is something I would definitely EXPECT a candidate to address if that candidate is a conservative, whether they are asked or not".

Well, looks like Fred did and backed up Rush.

Willard on the other hand waffled.

"Romney’s response is also listed in the thread — there’s quite a contrast between the two."

Thanks for the link. Looks like Fred came through and Romney acted like he was still Governor of Massachusetts.

Yes, ellery sent me a link to Fred's comment and I loved it. What I expected out of him and I was happy not to be dissapointed.
