There was good news and bad news Friday about the proposed new taxes in Michigan.
Democratic House Speaker Andy Dillon said Friday some of the planned taxes on services could be eliminated -- if the state's sales tax is increased.
Dillon said lawmakers are debating the idea of putting the sales tax increase on the ballot next year so that voters can decide their own financial fate.
The proposal, according to lawmakers, is to raise the state's sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent and to reduce the number of services that would be taxed.
Critics of the service tax idea would also like to see an alternative plan. "We can't find any guiding criteria or principal that identifies why the (services) that got selected got in and the ones that got excluded are not in," said Tom Clay of Citzens Research Council, a non-partician group.
Governor Jennifer Granholm said she is open to alternatives, but that the budget must be balanced. "If there needs to be adjustments certainly, I'm open," said Gov. Granholm. "But what I will not compromise on is, creating another structural deficit."
Lawmakers are expected to discuss the idea of a public vote on the sales tax sometime next week.
Meanwhile, both the Democrats and Republicans have launched radio ads addressing public criticism over the service tax vote.
"The Democrats in Lansing finished their night of taxing and now we see what they've done," states an ad from the state GOP.
State Democrats are running an ad that states "Ever notice when times get tough there are those who would rather tear people down and divide us."
Stop spending more than they take in. Sounds good to me. But if they do that, they can’t keep the people broke and they will loose control of those same people.
That seems a bit like saying that one can avoid the hangman's noose--if one merely opts for the firing squad instead.
Some choice.
Pretending to let the people decide if they are taxed or not, when in actuallity it is one tax or the other, not no new taxes at all. What’s the difference? Just more smoke and mirrors by the dem communists.
I’ve always said that states should dump their income taxes, property taxes, gas taxes, and user fees and switch to a single sales tax. I wouldn’t mind paying a 10% sales tax on everything if all of the other taxes were abolished.

Interesting comparisons.
Aha,,they will suck you in....if they do it. They might try something like that (doubtful), but they would add a temporary provision so that they could add the taxes later.

“tear people down and divide us”
Opposition to mandatory income redistribution is “tear people down and divide us”...
Don’t you just love that??
...Soooooooo.....
would you like the 15” dildo, or the big spikey dildo?
You decide, but either way,.......

The Fair Tax is a great idea that will never be supported by any state or federal plurality. After all, with the chances of vote buying reduced and little if any chance of income re-distribution, why should professional politicians sign on?
Well not quite. Seems like we have two GOP's here. One wing is fairly liberal, the other is fiercely conservative. Lots of internal battles going on for last few years...
Believe me, the conservative side is really angry about this.
Let’s see- what do the people want- taxes? or... taxes? what is it people? what say you?
How stupid. The people should demand a third option- NO TAXES!
The GR Press had a cover story (a very small one, continued inside) on the 4th, regarding a former rep from Macomb (I think it was) who is trying to get volunteers to help gather 90,000 petitions to get the governor’s recall on the ballot.
The productive people have left this state by the thousands, leaving control of the state to welfare bums, state workers, dumb bureaucrats and crooked politicians.
I see no reason why these socialists wouldn’t vote for a pay raise for themselves.
Why not a 25% sales tax?
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
I took the weekend off of freeping so I could enjoy 2007's last stab at summer.
I hope to God I'm wrong, but I don't see any kind of tax hike getting thumbs up by mitten voters at this point. Then again, Ms Molehern (like it?) was reelected. One never can tell what the future will bring.
Dave, Some of us have stayed here because of family and chosen to fight for what is left of this state. One of the issues I am against is Canadian Garbage in our state. That would include the Govenor.
