I am creating artificial life, declares US gene pioneer (How can this be good news?)

Craig Venter, the controversial DNA researcher involved in the race to decipher the human genetic code, has built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is poised to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on Earth.

The announcement, which is expected within weeks and could come as early as Monday at the annual meeting of his scientific institute in San Diego, California, will herald a giant leap forward in the development of designer genomes. It is certain to provoke heated debate about the ethics of creating new species and could unlock the door to new energy sources and techniques to combat global warming.

Mr Venter told the Guardian he thought this landmark would be "a very important philosophical step in the history of our species. We are going from reading our genetic code to the ability to write it. That gives us the hypothetical ability to do things never contemplated before".

The Guardian can reveal that a team of 20 top scientists assembled by Mr Venter, led by the Nobel laureate Hamilton

What exactly is ‘artificial life’?

Notice he is “creating” (whatever kind of) life.

“Igor, would you mind telling me whose brain I did put in?”
“And you won’t be angry?”
“I will NOT be angry.”
“Abby someone.”
“Abby someone. Abby who?”
“Abby Normal.”
“Abby Normal?”
“I’m almost sure that was the name.”
“Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA? IS THAT WHAT YOU’RE TELLING ME?”

Accelerate the space program ASAP. The continuation of our species depends upon it. It turns out that Pandora has brothers, sisters, and cousins and they are all holding little boxes.

Does every freaking thing on earth...real, artificial, and now even potential...have to do with global warming? Enough already! Now I'll have to search deep in the forgotten recesses of my fridge for "artificial life"...then I'll set it on fire on my balcony!

We're not the ones that are going to be going into space, not in great numbers. It'll be gengineered organisms; a variant of blue-green algae to produce oxygen on CO2-rich worlds, people with giant lungs to breathe in worlds with low pressure atmospheres, little troll-like guys to populate the heavy planets, people with chlorophyll to produce internal glucose on nutrient-poor worlds, cyborgs with machines to keep them alive during the centuries-long treks to other star systems.

Or maybe we will get lucky and invent warp drive and force fields, that would solve about 90% of these problems.

Do these individuals have any long term goals (or considerations), or this a 'hey mom look what I made' deal.

Why do this?
