George McGovern--remember him?--endorses Clinton
LA Times ^ | 7 October 2007 | Andrew Malcolm

...He recalled receiving a phone call in 1972 from his campaign manager, someone named Gary Hart, saying he'd come upon a bright, young man in Arkansas named Bill Clinton who had a hardworking friend named Hillary Rodham and they both were going to work Texas for McGovern.

"There's nothing in politics," said McGovern, "that requires more courage than trying to sell George McGovern in Texas." The crowd roared. McGovern praised the entire current field of Democratic candidates and said he hoped to live long enough to see an African American president. But, he added, "We have an old rule of courtesy in the United States: ladies first." Another crowd roar.

And thus the Democratic candidate from 1972 returned the favor to the wannabe Democratic candidate of 2008. He endorsed her candidacy.

Personal contact and influence plus paying back political debts is the pathway to power.

Or, "those that politic together stay together."

Bread endorses butter.

Butter endorses bread.

There’s one thing to remember about McGovern:

Like Jimmah Carter after him, McGoo hates this country for having failed to acknowledge his wisdom by electing him President. Hates us with a passion. We proved our unworthiness in 1972.

What sweeter revenge for Gorgeous George, then, than to inflict Hillary and Bill upon us? That’s what he REALLY wants to live to see.

"There's nothing in politics," said McGovern, "that requires more courage than trying to sell George McGovern in Texas."
. . . but then, Senator McGovern never tried selling conservatism in Massachusetts.

Hopefully McGovern’s endorsement of the Beast will work out as well as the Clinton’s endorsement of McGovern.....IOW...a landslide victory for the Republican! Inteesting that the beast proposed the 5g per baby idea, and McGoo proposed the 4g per family idea.

He tried to buy votes for $1000.00.

Hillary is doing the same thing offering $5000.00.

She’s been endorsed by O. J. Simpson too. May all her endorsements be so illuminating!

George McGovern is another leftie who could not make it in private business.

He had a bed and breakfast operation that went bankrupt. He said at the time, (paraphrase) Well I guess I never understood how all of thos laws I helped pass made it so difficult for the small businessman.

I would rather have Willie Sutton's endorsement.

Hilary has locked up another important segment of her base with the McGovern endorsement:

the “very old-irrelevant-liberal-white-politician-that-hasn’t-had-an-original-idea-in-forty-years-and-anyway should-have-died-ten-years-ago” block.

Yeah! That should bring a BIG block of votes into the fold.

McGovern was never even in the same class as Carter in hating his country.

He may be a senile old hippie leftover from the 1960's, but he has never been the dictator loving enabler that so personifies Jimmy Carter.

I had hopes McGovern would learn something when I read an interview a few years back complaining about all the government regulation and costs to the Bed and Breakfast place he and his wife tried to run. He lamented "I never dreamed it would be such hard work!"

But I guess he sold the B&B shortly after the interview and has already forgetten the lessons he was taught.

It is important not to forget: "He volunteered for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and served as a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot in the Fifteenth Air Force, flying 35 missions over enemy territory from bases in North Africa and later Italy, often against heavy anti-aircraft artillery. McGovern was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving his crew by crash landing his damaged bomber on a small Mediterranean island. McGovern's wartime service is at the center of Stephen E Ambrose's book The Wild Blue [2], which the author dedicated to McGovern's wife Eleanor"

His antiwar sentiments probably resulted from his religious convictions. He was a theological student and his faith plus his wartime experiences led him to become vociferously antiwar.

Understandable, but he was mistaken about Viet Nam. Most people who have met him, like him regardless of differing political views.

I can’t claim to have ever met McGovern personally. But I did meet Senator Burdick (neighboring North Dakota) when he was alive and Walter Mondale (former Minnesota Senator, then ambassador to Japan). Both men were quite likeable and pleasant. I could understand why anyone would warm up to them in small rural states and even vote for them, as long as they remained ignorant of what they actually did in Washington, D.C. I suppose McGovern is cut from the same cloth.

I do not hate liberals and I do not hate George McGovern. He is not to be hated and he is not to be feared. He was of that WWII generation and his politics went to the left. He was not a criminal like either of the Clintons. He was not a traitor like Kerry who came back from war and turned on those he served by calling them criminals. He is not a drunken maniac who hates women and leaves at them bottom of ponds to die. And he is not Jimmy Carter who is as mean spirited a man to ever hold the Presidency. He is a very decent man who politics I do not agree with. Admittedly, the Democrats have not produced many liberals who are decent men, but McGovern fits that bill.
