Ruger P345: reviews & Recommendations
10/13/2007

Posted on 10/13/2007 6:27:32 PM PDT by MichaelP

I'm considering buying a Ruger P345 for CC. The written reviews I've read are excellent. However, it has to pass the Freeper peer review board before I buy it. So what do you think?

Mike

For the money, Ruger is hard to beat. What do you want to use it for? That is the first question that needs to be answered for us to formulate a better recommendation.

I learned how to shoot a rifle today. It was a .22 Ruger.

I want to carry a .45 discreetly. This one is small enough and light, yet still performs...

I’m anything but a gun expert but I have read a bit about the P345. If you get one then make sure it’s a ‘second generation’ as the first ones were bulkier.

It’s a quality pistol for it’s price. Ruger made a serious mistake with the magazine safety however. They are routinely removed (a very simple thing to do) by people who own them. My own 345 had the magazine safety actually break. I suspect that it may have been due to my dry-firing it without a magazine in the gun (Ruger’s manual stipulates that there should always be one in the gun for dry-firing). Aside from that it’s a fine weapon. Its profile is approximately that of a Commander pattern, and it’s ergonomics are quite good in my opinion.

Ive had them both at one point, and frankly, Id rather go backwards and get the P-97. The new model had a lousy trigger compared to the old one, and I am not a fan of light rails.

I manage with a XD-45 compact most of the time.

Of course, with certain clothing I also use a Kel-Tec P-11, an SW 637 J-Frame, and a Kel-Tec P3AT. Just depends. ;)

I've heard good things about the P345 too. Ruger has a good reputation. I just don't care for the way they look (Except for their wheel guns. Those are fine).

I agree with you about the P97. It and it’s 9mm counterpart the P95 are Rugers best centerfire autos (IMO). Ruger triggers have always been a crapshoot.

The P97 is too bulky carry discreetly. The P345 is MUCH smaller and lighter. The grip is ergonomic and it is accurate and reliable. The trigger can be worked on.

I’ve had a P-89, P-90 and a P-95. Each one fired any type of ammunition (ball, hollowpoint, semiwad, you name it) flawlessly. I’ve never had autoloaders that fire as reliably as my Ruger centerfire pistols. If you are going to trust your life to an autoloader Ruger is a good choice. Just go and try several and pick the one with the best trigger.

I could never get into the 345. I carried one off and on for about six months a couple of years ago and then embarked on my glock fascination.

What do I carry now?

A Walther P-99 in 9mm..just like 007

Go figure.

By the way, the P-99 is what the glock should be.

Yet another review: http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/Ruger_P345.htm

Whatever you get, put at least a few hundred rounds through it to break it in and get a feel for it. Find out how it handles with various brands/types of ammo and how it fits your hand.

If it were my money I would get a CZ 2075 RAMI P in 40 cal. instead.

They are VERY high quality and can be had for the same or less money than the Ruger.

"The P97 is too bulky carry discreetly."

Are you sure you're not thinking about the P90 (they are definately bigger)?

I just dug my P-Rugers out of the safe and the 97 and the 345 have almost identical profiles (HxW) and I can't discern any difference in the weight either. The P90 (also on the table with me) is big, and I would agree a bit bulky for ccw.

Damn I love guns!

I own a 9mm RAMI (and a P-01) and I think it’s a top shelf piece. I’ve heard some stories about reliability with the 40 though. Do you own one?

Yes sir and a CZ-75B as well.

I have fired many hundreds of rounds through each without a single problem that I can recollect. I load all my own practice ammo and carry with Federal Hydroshock.

CZ’s are remarkable pistols. I can’t believe, considering what a 1911 bigot I’ve been most of my life (my favorite carry piece remains a Wilson Stealth), how much I’ve come to like them.
