Filipino/Filipino Americans plan $500 MILLION dollar lawsuit against ABC

A group of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans is preparing a 500 million-dollar class suit against ABC Network in the United States in response to a slur against Philippine medical schools and Filipino medical professionals, aired in the premiere episode of the fourth season of “Desperate Housewives”.

In that episode, the character Susan Mayer (played by actress Teri Hatcher) questioned the credentials of her gynecologist over a disputed diagnosis. Mayer said she wanted to check the doctor’s diploma to make sure it didn’t come “from some med school in the Philippines”.

The class suit is being filed by the Northern California chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA).

Two weeks since the controversial episode aired on television, Filipino Americans have persisted in their protests, saying the network’s apology sent to ABS-CBN’s North American News Bureau by email is not enough.

Sending a message One Filipino lawyer said the class suit is needed to protect the reputation and credibility of Filipino doctors.

“The reputations of doctors are affected, their income is affected and this is a major damage inflicted not only on them but also the universities in the Philippines,” said lawyer Ted Laguatan.

According to opthalmologist Tony Villanueva, the slur affects not just Filipinos but all ethnic groups.

“Kahit kaninong ethnic group, hindi tama ang sinabi niya, because we are here as equals and we’re just as smart as anybody else.”

For others, the class suit is about telling TV producers that ethnic slurs can have serious consequences.

“What’s important here is that this is sending a message to the other producers, the other stations that if you do this, this is what’s going to happen,” said lawyer Rodel Rodis.

I searched but couldn't find any mainstream news blurbs about this; all news seem to be on Filipino oriented websites.

Yeah. This is a character in a fictional situation speaking lines written for her. People need to settle down here. If this suit could fly, then a whole lot of people are owed a whole lot of money retroactively for slurs in fictional situations in books, magazines, movies, and TV shows.

What they should do, is get ABC to write in a future episode where an incompetent black doctor, and his incompetent airhead-blonde intern sidekick, and the incompetent Latino nurses, almost kill someone while the Filipino doctor ends up saving the person’s life and showing up everyone else.

They have universities in the Philippines? Who knew.

what a joke..you know, I work with many Filipinos at a local HMO office here in Los Angeles. It is common knowledge, that for a price, you can buy diplomas in their country. This is something I was told by more than one Filipino co-worker.

The mainstream media including ABC helped create the situation where this kind of “outrage” and lawsuit over such a trivial and fleeting remark could be taken.

ABC deserves the aggravation, even though the suit is without merit.

At least they didn’t say a med school in Mexico. ABC would be toast.

Why would they become thin skinned if the opposite might gain them millions?

"from some med school in the Philippines"

The suit is probably going to be handled by a lawyer who got his degree from some law school in the Philippines.
