A Minnesota college student was suspended and ordered to undergo "mental health evaluation" for his response to campuswide e-mails from school officials concerning the Virginia Tech massacre.
The college, Hamline University, a private, liberal-arts institution affiliated with the Methodist Church, has a policy on "Freedom of Expression and Inquiry" that guarantees that Hamline students will be "free to examine and discuss all questions of interest to them and to express opinions publicly or privately."
With such a strong guarantee on students' "freedom from censorship and control" by the university, student Troy Scheffler's e-mail must have been horrifically bad to warrant such a crackdown. Right?
Wrong. What Scheffler did was make a gun-rights case for concealed-carry permits on campus to help ward off potential Cho Seung-Huis before they strike Hamline.

I seem to recall there’s a little piece of legislation making its way through Congress that would now restrict this individual from owning a gun because he has now been referred to a shrink. The bill has lots of support, too, IIRC.
All the libs are cut from the same cookie cutter: The United Methodist church is so pro-abortion that they were PRO PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION until 2000; and they STILL have a waiver built in "for the safety of the mother's life". They even sent Bill Clinton congratulations for vetoing the two congressionally passed bans.
I guess theres a lesson here: When a university tells students to exercise their free speech rights, be careful what you say.

Could you imagine if he was able to recite the 2nd Amendment by memory!!!!! They would have been hiding under desks peeing themselves, this crazed madman about to snap and kill anything that moves. Head for the safe rooms, call 911!
Go scare these people for Halloween, learn the 2nd amendment and recite it robotically like the Terminator.
Next they will call the fear that you are getting older and wanting to save money against time you are too old to work a mental illness. Saving money or buying insurance in case you get sick could go the same way.
The college administrators are crazy. They need a psychological evaluation.
At a number of colleges with speech codes, etc., I am sure one could imagine: If You Favor FIRST Amendment Rights, You Must Be Crazy
While there may be a case for some civil charges against the university, and that there's something to be said for standing on principle, I think this student should take a step further. As a consumer of this school, and unless there's some other valid reason for him to want to stay, he ought to "take his business elsewhere," and transfer out.
(magslinger hangs head)I’m a baaaad person.
A response to dissidents in the old Soviet Union was to put the dissidents in mental institutions...

Dude. Your suppose to date girls you LIKE!
Evergreen State College, or maybe they call it a “university” now.
I honestly can’t remember the last time a news story made me physically sick to my stomach...this one did.
As a senior at a state university with a no-weapons policy (we’re lucky the police can carry), the idea that simply questioning a ridiculous policy can get you suspended and referred to a psychiatrist, is absolutely horrifying.
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” ~Thomas Jefferson, 1776
“The said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” ~Samuel Adams, 1788

bump for publicity
To loosely use a line from Raising Arizona, “You want to defend yourself, buy a gun. You want to find a Dunkin Doughnuts, call a cop.”
If this is the same guy from last weeks thread, I read the emails he sent. He choose his words poorly (if its the same guy) to say the least.
Re: Hot. No. She was a whale, but she was a brabuster type of whale.
Re: Being screwed. Well, when I met her, I was going through a lot of mental anguish because of my learning disability (High Functioning Autism) was hampering me socially. I wasn’t myself. Also, I was dating this girl and I got burnt so she was sort of a rebound case.
Well, during my breakdown, she broke up with me and then afterwards made an anti-dating site about me making fun of my suicide attempt.
Re: I thought I liked her but then I found out how spiteful she is.
Moral of the story: Never go out with a liberal. Behind their nice exterior, they’re really spiteful people.
