City Immigrants Are Wary of Governor's Plan on IDs

Far from the political debate on Governor Spitzer's plan to give undocumented immigrants valid driver's licenses, discussions are under way in New York City's immigrant-heavy neighborhoods about whether undocumented New Yorkers would even be willing to share their identities with the government.

"People here are scared," Abbas Razvi, 63, an owner of a grocery store in Midwood, Brooklyn, the heart of Little Pakistan, said. "People in this community have gotten stabbed and refused to report it. People here are going to have to think not twice about it, but 20 times. Policies can be good today, but turn bad tomorrow."

Mr. Spitzer's plan was launched in part to improve safety on the roads and to improve employment prospects for more than 1 million undocumented immigrants statewide. There is, however, fear among some immigrant groups that federal immigration authorities might get access to the Department of Motor Vehicles's records and use the information to deport them.

Immigrants who spoke to The New York Sun said some may not be willing to risk providing authorities with their personal information despite assurances from Mr. Spitzer and DMV officials that records would not be released to federal officials without a subpoena or court order.

"I'm thinking a lot of people won't go to get their licenses," the president of the Pakistani American Federation of New York, Asghar Choudri, said. His organization is based in Little Pakistan, one of the communities that has come under increased scrutiny and has seen deportations and arrests since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

"Some will come forward, but others will remain in the shadows," Mr. Choudri said.

A manager of a deli, Kamer Aledtha, 38, said most neighbors he has spoken with about Mr. Spitzer's plan have expressed ambivalence. "If you are illegal, you are going to...,"

Aint no way in H*LL an illegal immigrant/resident in Japan would or could even go into a Japanese DMV and get a Japanese drivers license.

It would be a no brainer even to not go in there in the first place.

If found out they were not on legal resident status, they would be stopped right at the DMV "uketsuke" information booth, politely told to wait over on the side for a few minutes <<"お客様、ちょっと此方で少々お待ちください">> and within a few minutes a Japanese police officer would be summoned to the DMV office, they would be detained, questioned, held in lock up with other visa overstayers or visa violators, and deported right straight out of Narita Airport probably within 48 hours, with a scarlet stamp on their passport disallowing them to enter Japan for another 10 years. They might not even be allowed to go back to their apartment to get their matters in order. And not a single Japanese would shed a tear about it. Except perhaps some attorneys from Western-trained Lawyers Federations looking for an ambulance to chase.

Wrong … only Illegal immigrants are wary of Governor’s plan on Id’s. What a misleading and ignorant headline.

Notice how every one of these threads about illegal immigration contains the “scared” “frightened” words. As if they are being taken to concentration camps??? The words are there, for just that reason, to paint this as genocide in waiting. Media is so slick...

And despite all that, before a few more years are up, every single govt in w europe will have turned to the “extreme” right. Darn good...

I can’t wait for the day that Spitzer goes to prison.

It’s gonna happen.

The libs who write these stories to make us feel "guilty" are really going to be surprised.

They think they can get us to back off, or at least influence the middle part of America that does not give too much thought to this, to make them upset at the "tragedies".

What will surprise them is that by and large, their journalistic campaigns to deflate our momentum will not resonate and will fall on deaf ears for nearly 90% of the American people. It is way past the tipping point.

In the press and in the courts is the only way they can stop the wildfire now. But try they will.

Expect these "fear" and "tragedy" articles to increase in emotion and intensity. They won't write the same about Americans slaughtered on the highways or in their homes and on the streets by illegal aliens, though. No, no requiems for THEM.

Totally agree. I’m sure that the journalists in Europe cannot beleive that their lies didn’t stop the people from making up their own minds...

The upside to this is that the more the Liberal press puts out these wailing, breast-beating “fear” and “tragedy” articles, the more they simply spread the panic to the illegal communities.

This war is at least 85% psychological.

Keep it up guys, you just aid in the work. Oh, and keep repeating that stuff about the feds one day getting access to the DMV files.

Amigos, Absolutely no need for concern, in fact, every illegal in the United States should move to New York city as soon as they possibly can.

Why isn't ICE conducting raids in these neighborhoods? I am far more concerned about illegal Pakistanis than illegal Mexicans.

If ICE did raids on a regular basis, Queens would lose 70% of its population.

I got on the PATH train, going to NJ, at the WTC on a Saturday evening and didn't hear a single word of English. There were people speaking Chinese (?), Arabic and Spanish, though, and possibly other languages as well. I felt like I was in The Twilight Zone.
