How old is the world?

Most people would say: "Nobody knows."

But the author of the book frequently described as the greatest history book ever written, said the world was created Oct. 23, 4004 B.C. – making it exactly 6,010 today.

In the 1650s, an Anglican bishop named James Ussher published his "Annals of the World," subtitled, "The Origin of Time, and Continued to the Beginning of the Emperor Vespasian's Reign and the Total Destruction and Abolition of the Temple and Commonwealth of the Jews." First published in Latin, it consisted of more than 1,600 pages.

The book, now published in English for the first time, is a favorite of homeschoolers and those who take ancient history seriously. It's the history of the world from the Garden of Eden to the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.

(Story continues below)

Of course, there will be those who disagree with Ussher's calculations of time – especially evolutionists who need billions of years to explain their theory of

I hope this isn't considered span. It came from Worldnet Daily, so I thought it might be okay. It looks like an interesting book for Believers.

# 2 Peter 3:8
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

WND is certainly required reading as is the Bishop’s calculation. How it is collated is up to the reader, but such common knowledge must be had by all, and Bacon said so.

Don't tell Ken Ham that. Screws with his whole Genesis theory.

No not spam.
Just idiotic blather from some nut.

(and evolution has nothing to do with it. anyone who actually believes the earth is only 6,000 years old needs a keeper and should be kept away from pointed objects and firearms.)

Without getting into it too much. If a person believes in the Bible, then a person believes what it says, literally. In Genesis, it tells us about the first day and so on. Getting to the point of this article, it is rediculous that anyone thinks they can name the exact day. Rediculous.

God is very clear on the fact that humans get 6000 years to attempt to rule ourselves. This is the six days of man. The Bible teaches that to God, in 2Peter 3:8, “a day is like a 1000 years.” And on the 7th day, the 7th 1000 year period, we get our rest, when Lord Jesus returns. I suspect we are very close to our 6000th year, but not quite. You would have to leave 7 years out for the tribulation, so at the very very latest, we could be in the year 5993, by God’s reckoning. It’s so hard to tell what year we are in from creation, since the calendar has changed so many times, also, since the day of creation, I suspect that the earth’s rotation has slowed quite a bit. Notice that during the tribulation, the Bible teaches that the “days will be shortened by a third”, which means that instead of a 24 hour day, we will have 16 hour days. God tells us that unless this shortening occurred, then we’d all perish. He will shorten the days so that the 7 years of the tribulation will be shortened. Perhaps the earth will accelerate on her axis after being struck by what the bible calls a “flaming rock from the Heavens” (space), which “blazes like a torch”, obviously a comet.

The book may very well be pretty close.

Just saying that it may be 24/7 but more likely the 2 Peter version of a day.

Here is the verse about the days being shortened:

Matthew 24: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened

I’ve always loved that verse because over and over again, we are told that the earth will go through horrible punishment for 7 years, during the Tribulation, but, like any loving parent, God finds a way to shorten our suffering, so that we will indeed go through 7 years of punishment, just that some of that punishment will occur with 16 hour days. I suspect that at the time of the creation of the earth, the earth rotated at that speed. 16 hour days may be what God designed at first.

If I remember correctly, Issac Newton examined Ussher’s work and could find nothing wrong with it.

Really? How about this part?

“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
