Terri Schiavo's Brother Wants to Talk With GOP Candidates About Her

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With Fred Thompson becoming the latest Republican presidential candidate to say that the federal and state government shouldn't have been involved in trying to save Terri Schiavo's life, her brother says he wants to talk with the GOP hopefuls.

He says they would be more likely to support the actions Congress and the Florida legislature took to try to help his family prevent her former husband from subjecting her to a painful euthanasia death if they knew more about her case.

"I want to personally talk with them about Terri's case," Bobby Schindler told the Boston Globe. "They need to be fully informed. There obviously exists a lot of confusion about my sister's situation."

Schindler told the newspaper that he plans to write each candidate a letter about Terri's circumstances and the painful 13-day starvation and dehydration death her former husband Michael made her endure.

He says Terri's case was not an end-of-life one because she wasn't dying and that his family took their lawsuit to federal courts because state courts had mandated that she be killed.

Thompson responded to questions about Terri Schiavo on Monday and said he didn't think that government should intervene in cases like hers. He says government should stay out and let families decide.

“It should be decided by the families — the federal government and the state government too, except for the court system, ought to stay out of those matters as far as I am concerned," he said.

One leading pro-life advocate who spoke with LifeNews.com about the comments on the condition of anonymity said the media is making too much of Thompson's comments in an attempt to show a divide between him and the pro-life movement or the Schindler family.

The pro-life leader said Thompson's view that government shouldn't make end-of-life decisions fits into the pro-life perspective but that government had to intervene in Terri's case because her family was split over her care.

However the pro-life community views Thompsons' remarks, the Schindler family has found a reason to be disappointed with the comments most of the candidates have had on the case.

The family endorsed pro-life Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, but he dropped out of the race last week.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has come under fire for his comments, as have ex-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Even former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is considered one of the better candidates left in the race from the pro-life perspective, told the St. Petersburg Times earlier this year, "I wasn't sure how the federal government had a role in all that."

You mean the principles the federal government was limited to very specific issues and the rest was left to the states?

Perhaps you are unaware that Amendments to the Constitution are actually PART of the Constitution, they ARE NOT subordinate to it.

No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. [Emphasis added is mine]

Even IF Florida law had allowed Michael Schiavo, Felos and Greer to kill Terri and ignore a Congressional subpoena (which it DOESN'T), the federal government was clearly empowered to prevent them from enforcing a law that is unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment.

You and the other liberaltarian-anarchists love to throw around the powers that were "reserved to the states," but you do not seem to understand that the Constitution was later AMENDED to address some of these issues.

If you had your way, the federal government would be so busy exercising the powers delegated to it by the Constitution, they wouldn’t have time to indulge the whimsical “constitutional” inventions of libs.

Actually it wasn't. Progressives like yourself run to the 14th Amendment because you have no argument. Tell us, in comparison to the passage of the 14th Amendment at what date was the 5th Amendment applied to the separate and sovereign states? The 1st? The 8th? 7th? Take your time to look it up if you so choose. The point is that contrary to progressive revisionists, the 14th Amendment did not incorporate any of the Amendments (and even then selectively over time) until the 20th century.

That puts you in good company. Our founding fathers would be pleased that the ideals to which they dedicated their lives are still alive. They would not be pleased at the threat that is waged against those ideals by our own countrymen.

It's pretty clear that it is restricting the power of states to make arbitrary laws to murder people. The end of the Fourteenth Amendment is also quite clear in its intent:

The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

It doesn’t make a damn bit of difference WHEN other Amendments were applied to the individual states, the Fourteenth Amendment gave Congress the authority to protect Terri. You may not like it, you may not agree with it, but it is very clear and it is the law of the land.

Go buy some more mining stocks so you will be protected from the government you hate so much and as an added benefit you will make RINO Paul a little wealthier personally.

Are you suggesting the 14th Amendment doesn’t come into effect until the others expire? When are their expiration dates? Where do you get your interpretation?

Excellent. I would hope Bobby Schindler could have a GOP summit. They truly don't haven't done their own research but remember Mitt Romney helped Haleigh Poutre, didn't he? She was going to end up as body parts for the organ donor set.

Giuliani is clueless, Ron Paul clueless, Huckabee waffles on Terri...Hunter was for Terri and so was Tancredo. Hunter and Tancredo out of that entire field of so called pro-life candidates. Mitt gets extra credit for helping Haleigh but in debates, he's ill equipped on the subject of Terri.

Terri was mentioned by a caller on Sean Hannity's radio show last night. Her death is troubling to many people as they become aware that it wasn't just about her.

Progressives were cheerleading Terri's death. To call us progressives is laughable. It's my opinion that we are all created equal and have inalienable rights unless our name was Terri Schiavo.

Forgettable Fred. I just did. If he won’t talk about his daughter, or someone’s sister, or health issues, how can he be the boss of the Dept. of HHS? President’s don’t get to choose what happens including civil rights and/or health issues.
