U.S. Sen. Arnold Schwarzenegger, rubbing elbows in the upper house with his uncle, Democrat Edward Kennedy?
Don't laugh. It could happen, according to a Field Poll released Monday.
The Republican governor, termed out of office in 2010, remains very popular with California voters and would give incumbent U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer a fight in what has been a solidly Democratic state, the poll found.
When the hypothetical question was put to registered voters in Field's most recent round of polling Oct. 11-21, Schwarzenegger had a one-point edge, 44 percent to 43 percent.
"The fact that Schwarzenegger is one point ahead in a state dominated by Democrats ... is another demonstration of his unique draw," said poll director Mark DiCamillo.
But Roy Behr, a Santa Monica-based political consultant who advised Boxer in her 1998 and 2004 re-election campaigns, said the early numbers are "a great sign of strength" for Boxer.
"It's important to remember that she always has a tough race," Behr said. In Schwarzenegger, he added, "you're talking about the best-known, most visible politician in the state. For her to be tied with him at the start of the campaign is just a sign of how good of a position she's in."

Look at the last graph: They are tied for ‘middle of the road’..Arnie will win this group.
In defending HER OWN SEAT???
How far up does your arm stink like s*** after reaching up your a$$ for that explanation?
Boxer over Ah-nold, 55-45%, take it to the bank. When there’s a choice between a liberal RINO and a liberal ‘Rat, the people vote for the real deal... the rodent.
I nominate this as Pic Post of the Day!
Lookee here, fellas!
Is that Boxer or Pelosi?
No way she’d win in this race. An idiot vs. a feisty optimist? I’d much prefer Arnold in the Senate, as liberal as he has turned out to be. She is SO BAD.
Arnold vs Pelosi???? Just what exactly is the difference????
Arnold vs Boxer (not Pelosi), what is the difference.......gessh
Ok. Hot coffee hurts when ejected through nostrils. Thanks.
She’s not so bad, she’s absolutely horrible. The worst Senator in CA history, and a truly despicable human being and one of the singlemost vicious campaigners around today. But this race has all the markings of the infamous Senate race between William Weld and John Kerry in 1996. When you have 2 liberals in a rodent leaning state running against each other, the voters stick with the rodent. If Ah-nold actually governed like a Conservative, he might change the equation, but he won’t, and there won’t be any reason for Conservatives to turn out to vote for him. Boxer will use that to her advantage and exploit every issue that would turn him off to the latter and depress GOP turnout.
Like bring a plastic butter knife to a gunfight. ;-)
She really is bad. If you take away the talking points she is provided it becomes quite evident that she is really ignorant.
Right!
Free Republic...Where There's Not A Dime's Worth Of Difference Between Anybody!
That didn't work for Phil Angelides, as die-hard a 'Rat as was ever hatched. The wild card is the female vote - if nominally Republican women vote for Boxer just because (and evidence suggests they have done so in the past) Arnold would have a big problem beating her. On the other hand, Arnold has considerably more charisma with female voters than any other California GOP contender in recent years, so he could nullify this effect. I think he'll defeat Boxer if he wants to...or more more likely, she'll decide to "retire" if he enters the race.
In 2010 after two years of President Hillary, even Californians would likely be so sick of incompetent female politicans that Arnold would cruise to victory. ;)
The difference may be that Arnold is an immigrant and foreign born. One in every four residents of California is foreign born.
