Thompson responds to Philip Martin allegations (with video)
FOX News ^

Washington, D.C. Fred Thompson woke up Sunday morning to a front page story in the Washington Post revealing that his long-time friend and campaign co-chairman, Philip Martin, has a criminal record that includes cocaine trafficking.
Thompson responded the story following his appearance on Meet the Press this morning, saying Martin never told him about his criminal past and wish he had known about it earlier.
He thought it was over and done with and forgotten about I am sure, Thompson said. But of course nothing is ever over and done with and forgotten about in this business.
----end excerpt----
Of course they didn't report on the best part of the video: Fred saying "Philip Martin hasn't raised any improper funds."
This is an important distinction between Martin and Hsu and Fred must keep (and with more force) making that distinction to the press!

Fred is handling the Phil Martin issue very well. He's taking his time to think about it, and getting all the facts, before he acts.
ISN'T THAT WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT OF A PRESIDENT?

Martin should have been subject to an extensive background check! Had he appeared "out of the blue" so to speak to help the campaign he undoubtedly would have been checked out, but since he was friends with Fred for over 15 years and with Fred having no inkling about his past, Fred obviously thought such a check wasn't necessary. I wouldn't have run a background check on a long time friend either.

Hilary has a record too, stole 900+ FBI files. Still has them too. Let’s not let her forget it.

Maybe he’ll ask his lawyers first. :-)

Fred handled this well. We need as republicans to stand up to the attacks.
To: CharlesWayneCT
And we need a candidate that shoves crap like this right back in the libs’ faces.

He’s loaning tha man a jet as a friend and supporter, and in return Fred gave him a title. Why would he need a background check as a successful businessmen.

It was a mistake, to be sure, but NOT a MAJOR mistake as you pose it to be.
I agree, friends or not, in this day and age, all should be vetted, just to be fair-if nothing else.
But a MAJOR mistake? NOT!

BTW, I stand by my earlier comments...
How better to demonstrate your rehabilitation and pay your debt to society than to contribute to the process of electing our next POTUS?
Does man not have the ability to rehabilitate and have a productive life after that rehabilitation?
As has been posted, many, many, times...there are much more heinous examples of running afoul of the law in former and current politicians' lives and campaigns. Most are without rehabilitation, or even true regret.

Yes, but I certainly would blame Martin for not telling Fred about his past before I would blame Fred for not doing a background check on a friend he has known since the early 90’s. Now, lets see. Martin was in his 20’s when he had a drug problem. Served no time in jail...but did have probation. Now 25 yers later and nothing has happened since. So obviously he has a clean record for the past 25 years. Should that be enough to allow him to let a friend use his airplane at a discount? All of which is not against any law.

I suppose you would do background checks on everyone who contributed and or raised money and helped in anyway with a campaign. In the first place would be cost, and the second everyone would have to sign a consent to be checked, probably cost more money than raised. Good old saying “put brain in gear before inserting foot”.
