From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Mark Murray
A longtime friend and campaign fundraiser for Fred Thompson, Philip J. Martin, has resigned his role in Thompson's campaign.
The Washington Post reported over the weekend Martin had drug-related convictions dating back to the 1970s, and more recently Martin has had issues with the IRS including tax liens.
Martin had been providing use of his aircraft for Thompson to travel, and advisers tell NBC News that Thompson is not traveling on that aircraft today.
The campaign has issued this statement form Martin: "I have decided to resign my position as Chair of 'First Day Founders' of 'The Friends of Fred Thompson.' The focus of this campaign should be on Fred Thompson's positions on the issues and his outstanding leadership ability, not on mistakes I made some 24 years ago. I deeply regret any embarrassment this has caused."

I'm glad this is being resolved this quickly. The reports of Martin's decades-old convictions first surfaced Saturday night, and now by lunch on Monday the issue has been put to bed. I think the Thompson campaign comes out of this looking pretty good and Senator Thompson didn't (at least publicly) "throw his friend under the bus." If this is any indication of how scandal would be handled in a Fred Thompson administration, I may vote twice!

The primaries are historically about momentum...Rudy has been pushed as “inevitable” for a long time now. I don’t find it surprising that there are that many Republicans out there that are not sufficiently involved to reject the declarations of the MSM and the Republican “establishment”.
I posted in that thread.....”Now I have to change my tagline.”
Has Sandy Berger resigned yet? Oh yeah, the rules are different for Democrats.........
Sorry, missed it...
Just trying to keep you all legal and such ;-)
Instead of wasting time on a third party, conservatives need to take back the gop, and clean house. Everyone associated the Bush family, and amnesty must go.
Hunter fans are OK, right thinking people. They support their candidate. The national press will not let a candidate for nomination from the House win that nomination. VP, maybe, but the top spot on the ticket? Their template includes Senators, Governors, activists who have never held elective office, and mayors.
“No, he is my lifelong friend”
lol, that would have been a great Weekly World News headline.
No, that’s Kucinich
I chalk it up to rank stupidity, not a conspiracy.
Want to see their heads explode? Mention Duke Cunningham or Brent Wilkes, LOL!
speaking of rank stupidity, how ya doing nutter?
Sure. But I pitched it after a big laugh. Then I turned my PC on and came back to FR.
I saw that. It was great.
(IT'S A JOKE! DON'T TAZ ME,BRO!)
Well, at least you found some use for a cat; dead or alive :)
I’m doing great...but considering Hunter is still at less than 3%, maybe you should be more concerned about your own mental health...they placed you on suicide watch yet?
Not yet. I figured I’d wait for the indictments on Hunter from the Cunningham investigation first. Or maybe if someone points out to me that he has a record on education like Fred....
