Waterbury (WTNH) _ A noose hanging as a Halloween display is sending a frightening message to members of the community.
"Recently there has been a lot of hype around it so you can imagine how it could make anyone feel, African-American in particular," said the president of the Greater Waterbury NAACP, Jimmie Griffin.
Griffin received numerous phone calls about the hanging man so he drove to Homestead Avenue to check it out for himself and to ask the homeowner to take it down.
"It brings back some bad memories about our history in this country," said Griffin.
News Channel 8 approached the unidentified homeowner as he was on his way out.
"You known that this reminds African-Americans of lynchings that were done in the South," said Griffin to the homeowner.
"Yeah, but that was not the intention," the homeowner responded.
The homeowner went on to say that the hanging man is a Halloween decoration and neighbors says the home always gets into the Halloween spirit.
"Yeah, they always decorate their house, they are very likable people," said neighbor Salvatore Boiano.
Griffin says that may be the case, but the symbolism of the noose is extremely sensitive and others should be aware of that.
"It seems to me that lately it's hard for people to not know that nooses are an embarrassment to hang anymore," Griffin said.
The homeowner did say he will remove the noose this evening.
I remember seeing nooses at Halloween beginning many years ago. I think it’s stupid, ghoulish, ridiculous and a total waste of time and money. But it’s not racist. In the past few months the race-baiters decided that they would add one more thing to the huge list of things that are automatically called racist: ropes. Now the FBI investigates ropes. Why didn’t it investigate ropes last year and the year before? Because NO ONE considered ropes racist!
Why we could all guess that if an abortion suction aspirator machine was depicted as Halloween decor, that folks would be up in arms about that, too.
These nooses have probably been used as Halloween displays for years. As you say, why is it only becoming a problem now?
In any case I have to wonder how much longer this country can last when certain segments get offended by simple meaningless child like holiday decorations. If this is something that is going to divide us, how can we stand up to the terrorists?? Just like certain presidential candidates and their supporters flying off the handle because reporters ask them tough questions. And then they have the nerve to say Bush treats the media badly!
I wonder if this is more “frightening” then when people leave the downtown office late to walk to their cars, or when they get onto the mass transit and realize they’re the only white person there?
I wonder if the author of this report has ever been so “frightened” and whether he/she chose to editorialize on that experience?
Wait until we can’t buy white sheets anymore because they offend somebody. Shaking my head again.
I collapse and break into tears at the sight of a knife because of the history of scalping settlers by “Native Americans”. My lawsuits against any store with a housewares section have been very lucrative.
Not to mention how the sight of a box of saltines puts me in a suicidal depression because of the decades of abuse by “African Americans” calling us “crackers”.
If you put up a heated outhouse as a hallow’en decoration it wouldn’t be long before you were accused of being and Ezra Taft Benson!
I had a hanging man in my front tree also, probably purchased from the same internet merchant. I was waiting for someone to complain but it never happened. In fact, I always get compliments on my halloween decorations..........
...geez, what is the world coming too?
He’s served/serving (not sure about his release date) time in the Wyoming state pen for cattle rustling.
Considering some of his other local dealings, including with us before we found out what a shady character he is, I wouldn't be surprised to find out he was related to Mr. Haney, and had stolen & eaten Arnold.
Does this belong in Breaking Noose?
It is insane & I have had it. I can go to a black part of the town next to me & be called all kinds of nasty names & nobody is going to say sh-t about it if I complain. They will say well you shouldn’t have been in that part of town. These asinine double standards need to stop asap.
The authorities have been droning out that lame excuse for decades.
