New Orleans murder rate for year will set record

On a cool, clear mid-October weekend six people were murdered in New Orleans. The killings brought the tally of the slain in the Crescent City this year to 163, above the total of 162 for the entirety of 2006. The following weekend three more people were murdered in New Orleans - on Saturday alone. With nearly two full months left in the year, it is looking like the homicide rate in New Orleans will substantially outpace 2006's near-record numbers, which themselves far eclipsed even gang-plagued, hopelessly violent cities like Compton, California.
Indeed, with a murder rate of nearly 70 per 100,000, New Orleans is now three times more dangerous than murder-plagued cities like Philadelphia (recently nicknamed "Killadelphia") and Baltimore (home to HBO's apocalyptically grim series The Wire).

Given how much of the population left in 2005 and never returned, this is even more appalling.

Hey, no problem, it's just that "nawlins" brand-recognition. Mayor Ray Nagin said so.
Welcome to the "Chocolate City"!

"Indeed, with a murder rate of nearly 70 per 100,000..." That surpasses Baghdad, Iraq too.

Back in the mid-90’s the NOPD dramatically reduced the murder rate by dumping unattended homicide victims in surrounding communities. Maybe Nagin needs to take a page out of Marc Morial’s playbook.

No it's not....the place is economically depressed and many illegals have settled there now hoping fed dollars would give them jobs in the cleanup and rebuilding.
Unfortunately, for our uninvited non-English speaking / reading sponges, they were sold an empty dream not even beginning to understand the state-wide corruption in Dem-controlled Louisiana.
Those fed dollars have been channeled into Demoncrap businesses with services and work only being completed on the books. A well oiled machine of goobermint sponsored money laundering at the state level.

are taxpayers getting their moneys worth, can’t they try harder to commit more murders?

Wow, that's like 18,000 a year, or 1,500 a month, in a population of about 27 million. Like, say, ......Iraq
The comparison you won't hear on the network news.

Speaking of the NOPD, what ever came from the discovery of its “Phantom Cops” after the storm?

Lets see we have a war in Iraq with a murder rate that is only a few of times higher.

I don’t have any idea. After I left NO in 2001, I haven’t paid much attention to goings-on there.

It would not surprise me a bit to see the media really start covering just how bad it is in NOLA on January 15, 2008 — the day after the Republican governor takes office.
