A police plan to map out Muslim communities that was sharply criticized and called racial and religious profiling by civil rights groups has been at least temporarily halted, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.
"There was a clear message from the Muslim community that they were not comfortable with it. So we listened," Mary Grady, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department, told The Associated Press.
Grady said the program hadn't been dropped, but rather had been indefinitely postponed. She couldn't immediately say when it might be resumed.
Grady said the police initiative to strengthen ties with Muslim communities would go forward, and police planned to meet with Muslim leaders on Thursday.
Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing announced last week that the LAPD's counterterrorism bureau planed to identify Muslim enclaves to determine which might be likely to become isolated and susceptible to "violent, ideologically based extremism."
In a statement, Salam Al-Marayati, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, celebrated the decision.
"I am glad to hear (Downing) is putting the plan aside," said Al-Marayati. "All Muslim organizations are united in purpose to defend the rights of Muslim Americans while developing a positive and constructive relationship with the LAPD."
When the plan was announced, several Muslim groups and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California sent Downing a letter expressing concern.
Downing and other city officials defended it, saying the idea was to deepen ties with Muslim communities. The plan would have had data assembled by the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis.
Downing testified about the plan before a U.S. Senate committee on Oct. 30.
There are an estimated 500,000 Muslims in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.
It was only a matter of time......
I guess Hezbollah will be haPPY too... and then Chechnyans
Can someone show any evidence that security is our number one concern?
Our desire to never offend anyone will be our undoing.
The hand-wringers have no idea what they’re getting themselves into.
"Not comfortable?" Nice criteria.
TSA???
Dayum. Serious #s.
Headline should read:
LAPD ends highly criticized common-sense community security program
So I guess the next logical step would be for the LAPD to start asking criminals if they’re “comfortable” with being arrested or sent to jail.
No, the pressure not to offend people perpetrating evil. They have no problem offending the good people doing nothing wrong.
WEENIES!!
PC & race politics have completely clouded our judgement and minds. Can we save our country?
The mapping was already complete. They know where every single listed Muslim lives, the identity of the vehicles parked on their property, who owns the dwelling, their financial status and the names and other information in regards to their neighbors. In addition to their telephones and visitors being monitored and their computers being compromised.
I was told this by a source that wished to remain anonymous.
Perhaps.
“Our desire to never offend anyone will be our undoing.”
Or.......
Political correctness will get us all killed.
And one of these days they are going to rise up and claim nationhood and piss on their host country. Oh, wait . . .
did they stop all gang mapping? How about white folks talking about the Constitution too much, Reno said they were a threat.
“rights of Muslim Americans”
You cannot be a muslim and be an American.
