New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine on Thursday said he's willing to risk losing re-election by increasing highway tolls to try to resolve state fiscal woes.
The governor continued to refuse to detail how much he wants tolls to increase, but said he'll present a formal plan in January.
Speaking at a League of Municipalities convention, Corzine, as he has throughout the year, detailed fiscal woes he claims prevent the state from investing in key needs.
"We will get one chance at a serious financial restructuring and it has to be done right," Corzine said. "But you can take this to the bank , I will be bold in the name of progress."
The Democratic Corzine is up for re-election in 2009, but said, "Make no mistake. I am willing to risk losing my job if that's necessary to set our fiscal house in order and get New Jersey out from the debt burden constraining our future."

Corzine to the rescue!
And they’ll still vote for the Hilderbeast
My ass. No politician would ever do this. He is a liar. Move on.
ALWAY’S raise taxes....NEVER cut spending. Nice job Jersey, got what you voted for.
Just use the Garden State Parkway... I-95 sucks!!
Oh, what a martyr he is! As with most Democrats he could committ any crime and still get reelected.
Where in the article is the part about cutting spending?
The rats are playing their usual games. The rats starve the essential programs such as roads and law enforcement. They lavish tax dollars on entitlement programs such as Medicaid, homeless help, government pensions, global warming, and other non essential areas. A crisis on the essential programs is a perfect excuse for crying poor man. Only a brave rat can rescue the citizens (and illegals) from this deplorable situation.
How noble of him.
“New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine on Thursday said he’s willing to risk losing re-election by increasing highway tolls to try to resolve state fiscal woes.”
Let’s see:
Do our NJ state highway taxes more than account for the portion of the state budget for roads? Yes.
Do our NJ state drivers license fees, NJ state vehicle registration and title fees and all our DMV activities take in many millions more in revenue than the cost of operating the state DMV? Yes, again.
Does NJ have one of the highest set of automobile insurance premium rates in the country?, Yes, a third time.
So, how is it that Mr. Corzine has a laser focus for getting more revenue out of New Jersey’s drivers???
It seems to me its time for a “Drivers Revolt” in New Jersey!!!!!!!
Hey! Try not to bash Jersey too much. Believe me we don’t all vote for the Dims and we don’t all want higher taxes, Dim corruption and the smells coming from the Meadowlands.
Most of the state is beautiful and a nice place to live.
Corslime will do what he can to increase the influence of the unions in state government (read— bigger government bureaucracy and higher taxes). That probably means we need to increase the rate of property tax increase and the tolls on the highways. It also makes it more difficult for the next Republican to fix things.
Gettouttaheah, as they say in Nu Joisey. In other words, no one believes this BS.
End The Occupation, Corzine Resign
Indeed; he could go back to living life as a humble mild mannered billionaire;
Actually (believe it or not), in New Jersey the answer to that question is NO. That's why this state's transportation trust fund is going to be depleted entirely in a few years.
Agreed; Growing up I spent my summers on the south jersey beaches. I am bashing CORZINE

“Actually (believe it or not), in New Jersey the answer to that question is NO. That’s why this state’s transportation trust fund is going to be depleted entirely in a few years.”
Are you sure that the depletion of the “transportation trust fund” is not do to any siphoning off of some of its “reserves” to non-transportation related costs, as part of previous budgetary fixes, and now, instead of restoring it from other revenue sources, the “drivers” are going to be asked to make-up for capital they already raised, that was removed from serving the transportation purposes it was raised for?
They do it every year and then cry the road aren’t getting fixed and we need to raise taxes.
