Edwards Releases Plan to Combat Hunger

CARRBORO — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Wednesday released his plan to fight domestic hunger and called on Congress to immediately take action to fund programs that provide food services for millions of Americans. His six-point proposal urges Congress to pass a farm bill that would provide food stamps and support food banks, and asks lawmakers to reform the food stamps program to help more families get more assistance. The plan also tells politicians in Washington to quickly provide $5.1 billion to help low income families pay their winter heating bills to free up extra money for food. The former North Carolina senator said that he would help low-income children get more access to healthy meals, support programs that provide meals for the elderly, and develop a new program that would identify and provide for neighborhoods that don't have full-service supermarkets. Edwards announced the plan shortly before a scheduled appearance at a homeless shelter in Carrboro. More than 35.5 million people in the United States went hungry in 2006, according to a Department of Agriculture study. Of those, about one-third reported they had "very low food security," meaning they had a substantial disruption in the amount of food they typically eat. Edwards has brought to the presidential campaign trail a populist message defined by several proposals targeting the nation's poor. Among them, he's also laid out plans for universal health care, raising the minimum wage and revitalizing the economies of rural areas.

Poor guy, he's fallen and he can't get up. Guess he's never heard of food stamps, welfare, unemployment, soup kitchens, churches, private charties and other efforts to do just that.

The democrats claim to be well informed on the issues, but can't help themselves from proving just how out of touch they really are.

Rest easy John. The mediamedics are on the way.

I volunteer on the weekends pushing pallets at a local foodbank...

Last year, they arrested large numbers of folks SELLING the free food at local flea markets...

The only people starving in America are victims of thier parents drug abuse....

What a joke, it never works. I’m in grocery and convenience stores all the time watching people use their Lonestar cards to buy junk food and candy.

In a nation where the greatest health threat facing the poor is obesity, I hope John Edwards is prepared for a class action lawsuit, right alongside all the other purveyors of flab, like those eeevil corporate transfattists.

He would do better to release a plan to combat Hillary instead.

Guess he's never heard of food stamps, welfare, unemployment, soup kitchens, churches, private charties and other efforts to do just that.

He reminds me of that speech in "The Life of Brian":

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Housing, food and healthcare should all be free! Let the “rich” pay for it.

Then, of course, the people won’t be free.

The Democrats have enslaved the poor in this country with entitlements. They must vote for Democrats, because they can’t take care of themselves.

The argument FOR slavery touted the health and comfort of “kept” slaves prior to Emancipation. Slaveowners said “they took care of the slaves, who couldn’t take care of themselves.”

Sounds familiar. The Democrats haven’t changed.

After tomorrow I'm going to need "very low food security," meaning they had a substantial disruption in the amount of food they typically eat. I might have to pay LA Weightloss to be the enforcer on this.

Perhaps his plan to combat hunger will include tipping the restaurant waitresses who are (literally) serving on the front lines of this good fight.

Where the hell are the BILLIONS already being spent each month to fight “poverty” going???

Why is it that most of the “hungry poor” we see on television are so damned fat?

Why is it that the more we do for the “poor”, the more “poor” we have.....
That’s exactly what happened when we elevated unwed mothers feminist icon status and they became the responsibility of the taxpayers rather than their own families —— we got a lot more unwed mothers, throwing their bastards onto the “welfare” system...

Democrats NEED for there to be poor, ignorant and dependent folks in the land... That is their base.

So which is it?

An epidemic of "Hunger", or an epidemic of obesity-induced Type II Diabetes?

Gonna be kinda hard to maintain separate, parallel epidemics.
