Christing said he doesn't know, but he's impressed with Romney's sincerity. "Many have called him a flip-flopper. ... I think (he's) real. I think he would be a shoo-in as the Republican candidate if not for the fact that he is Mormon. In one way that's sad to me, and in another way it's so interesting. He could be Baptist or Lutheran or Jewish and it wouldn't be such a big deal."

Interesting article. It will be interesting to see how this project turns out.

I think this guy does not want Romney to be president.

If this guy believes this film will help Romney, he is mistaken. Could be that he is simply interested in making money.

"To understand Romney, you have to understand Joseph Smith," Christing said. The Romney Mormonism apologetics platoon has been screaming at FR for months just the opposite ... if one questions Mormonism in the context of Romney's run for highest office you're a B I G O T. Very clintonesque to try and triangulate the issue.

I could vote for somebody who was BORN INTO Mormanism fairly easily; I couldn’t vote for somebody who converted to it. The Mormon church functions mainly as a support group for middle class people trying to raise children, which is commendable. The good news for Mormons is that most people don’t really give a rat’s *** for theology; that’s good news for Mormons because theirs is in desperate need of work. What Mormons call theology is vanishingly close to what most people call science fiction.

I have become something of an historian on the early Mormon church, the events surrounding Joseph Smith and then Brigham Young are disturbing. My latest find is “Wife No. 19 or A STORY OF LIFE IN BONDAGE Being a Complete Expose of Mormonism and Revealing the Sorrows Sacrifices and Sufferings of Women in Polygamy” By Ann Eliza Young, apostate wife of Brigham Young.

http://www.mazeministry.com/mormonism/19thwife/19thwifedownload.htm

The downloads are above. Her account of the Meadows Mountain Massacre is chilling (chapter 13), Young was trying to starve out the settlers even before the massacre.

The point is, a lot of the historical baggage of the church will inevitably be sucked into any Romney presidency. What a disaster waiting to happen.

OK, It’s religious belief at election time again? I didn’t realise that Christianity was our state religion? Who cares what the candidate believes in or how he worships God. He can be an agnostic, so long as he gives his heart to the protection and welfare of the country. So he belongs to a different branch of Christianity, so what? The SOS happened when JFK ran, and Alfred Smith too. Remember the fear that the Pope was going to have control over the USA through a Catholic President? If it got down to Romney and Lieberman on the same ticket I’d vote for them. It’ll still be better than what will be on the opposing side. Lets cut the crap, this is politics not religion. We should be concerned about the economical and domestic well being of the USA, not the beliefs of any particular religious group. I’m not leaning towards Romney as a candidate, but at the same time, I’m not going to hold his religious beliefs against him nor any one else’s.

Is this the same Joseph Smith that was arrested for being a con artist?

Um, yes. The peepstone false prophet who rewrote the King James Bible to fabricate at the end of the Book of Genesis a lengthy prophecy of his ‘coming in these latter days’. Even I would not compare Mitt Romney to Joe Smith, the abject fraud.

I got confused because it sounded like a pro Romney article and had to go back and check my blog to see if the name was the same from the NY court case.

“Thanks for the link, FC.”

It’s a really good one, written in 1875, the voice is quite modern. Chapter 4 goes into some of the “my way or the highway” methods of Brigham Young, which of course carry over into the current attempts to cull any negative mention of Romney’s Mormonism.

An interesting note is that Sydney Rigdon was in Pittsberg when Joseph Smith was killed, apparently because Joseph Smith had made a pass at Rigdon’s daughter! Of course, I’m sure Joseph had no carnal interests there (he was a saint!).

I feel exactly the same way - it’s his family’s tradition.

Who cares what the candidate believes in or how he worships God.

Apostle Sidney Rigdon, General Conference, April 5, 1844

“A man is not an honorable man if he is not above all law, and above government.... The law of God is far more righteous than the laws of the land; the laws of God are far above the laws of the land. The Kingdom of God does not interfere with the laws of the land, but keeps itself by its own laws.”

-    Times and Seasons, v. 5, May 1, 1844, p. 524, also printed with punctuation changes in History of the Church, v. 5, p. 292

“...the practice of Church officials making suggestions to public administrators and lawmakers [since the Church’s early days in Missouri and Illinois] has never died... In the legislative area, relations between Church officials and law makers are still very direct. Some are out-in-the-open for the public to see; others are behind the scenes. Communiques to members of Congress are periodically sent by the First Presidency. Two famous ones were the 1946 admonition to the Utah Congressional delegation to oppose a peacetime draft and the 1965 letter to all Mormons in Congress to resist the repeal of ‘right-to-work’ laws.”

-    J.D. Williams, “Separation of Church and State in Mormon Theory and Practice,” Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, v.1, Summer 1966, p. 47

“I think that the Prophet Joseph Smith was right about the Church saving the Constitution. I believe every word of it. But I just don’t know how the Lord will bring this about. Will He use good priesthood brethren in high places in the military and government to give direction and counsel to our present leaders? Or will He give the prophet a revelation for us to move ahead and take command in some sense? It’s just hard to say when you don’t know what the Lord’s got up His sleeve. But I’m convinced that we are going to play a role like we’ve never before played in the shaping up of things in the world.
“I think that doors have already been opened and we’ve been the men the Lord has selected to walk through those doors... You put together the political, military, and ecclesiastical into a group of men and you’ve got super-human leaders.”

-    Interview with an anonymous informant, Department of Defense, 1983, as quoted in The Mormon Corporate Empire, by John Heinerman and Anson Shupe, 1985, p. 178

“You will see the constitution of the United States almost destroyed. It will hang like a thread.... A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America.... [T]he land will be left without a Supreme Government,... [Mormonism] will have gathered strength, sending out Elders to gather the honest in heart... to stand by the Constitution of the United States.... In these days... God will set up a Kingdom, never to be thrown down.... [T]he whole of America will be made the Zion of God.”

Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., May 6, 1843, in Roberts, Journal of John J. Roberts,

Judging from your post, searcher for anti-Mormon sensationalism would be more descriptive.
