“”I thought you basic doubt was the ability to have an automobile powered by a battery. That has been done quite a while ago. The Tesla’s range is 245 miles. This battery is just an improvement.””

No the basic issue is that exxon is claiming that they can downsize a car battery to the size of a PC’s battery. That simpley can’t happen without a loss of range (miles per recharge). The film allows for more anodes and cathose which will give batteries more short-term power (better acceleration) but the need is still there for all of the chemicals that have the ions.

Today, most vehicles have toaster-sized nickel-metal hydride batteries under the hood.

Wouldn't this statement be true only for electric and/or hybrid vehicles? Most vehicles have toaster-sized lead-acid batteries under the hood.

They're missing the real story, which is this: this invention has been locked away for years in an underground vault, 10 stories beneath ground level at Exxon's headquarters. An intern screwed up and released it to the world, causing panic in oil company boardrooms and in the inner precincts of the Trilateral Commission.

Am I the only one thats skeptical about this?

No. If this technology was any good the press release would have been saved for when it was about to hit the market.

Whatever happened to Caterpillar's new battery technology it was making a big deal about a couple of years ago?

That is ions must attach themselves to anodes and cathoses.

I attached myself to a cathouse once...........

You still haven’t addressed the basic issue...its the chemicals that contain the ions that need to be greater in size...not the anodes and cathodes. Thats why you can’t downsize the batteries.

Firefly Technologies, a subsidiary of Caterpillar has alleviated this problem. The increased the surface areas of the plates in the batteries using a graphite foam instead of the usual metal plates. See link: http://www.fireflyenergy.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=204&Itemid=89

A car battery like a laptop battery! Thats just great, so now we will have cars that explode or catch fire?

And gas can't explode or catch fire? Come on now. That statement doesn't hold any water.

The company said the Firefly Group 31 battery will be initially available next summer with full production scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2008.

Promises, promises.
