Virginia GOP Demands 'Pledge of Intent' from Primary Voters

When voters cast their ballots during Virginia's Feb. 12 Republican presidential primary, they'll be required to sign a document stating they intend to support the party's nominee for president in a strategy one conservative leader called a "bullying tactic" but a nonpartisan election official dismissed as just "a piece of paper."

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Culture/Society; Politics/Elections; US: Virginia
KEYWORDS: elections; gop; loyalty; loyaltyoath; primary; republican; va2008; vagop
This is pure electoral games (and will only drive true Conservatives away from the Viriginia G.O.P.), For those of us Conservatives (though I am not a virginian- I did go to collge there, Lynchburg..) that WILL support a conservative nominee but not a liberal this is a -slap- in the face by RINOS! GOOD GOSH YOU VA FREEPERS (Still) NEED TO TAKE YOUR PARTY BACK FROM THE MODERATE/Liberal/Rockefeller Wing..!

How utterly stupid. It is nonbinding and darned annoying. Who comes up with this nonsense?

Hubby and I voted in the RAT 2004 VA primary just for kicks. If we were still there, I think we would do it again.

Pledge of Intent

There’s been quite a bit of hand-wringing over the Pledge of Intent that voters will have to sign when voting in the Republican Primary in February. So, without further ado, I give you the pledge, in its entirity.

I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support the nominee of the Republican Party for President.

That’s it.

No Oath of Undying Fealty to the Republican Party, not even a set in stone agreement to vote Republican in the fall.

Simply a statement that you’re participating in the Republican Primary in good faith. That when you walk into that voting booth in February, you’re doing so with an intent to vote Republican in November.

Is this a perfect solution to the issue of cross-over voting? No, but it’s the best we can do until we get registration by party (contact your local elected official).

It’s stupid. It is meaningless. And it is UNAMERICAN.

yes but for those of us (once again I’m not a Virginian, though if I were I would be proud to be one ;)), and INTEND NOT to support a RINO POTUS Nom, but WOULD support a CONSERVATIVE; They are FORCING us to lie (I’d personally rather..sit it out in that case-and they are driving away “good conservatives”). Thanks Rinos, thanks liberals, and thanks party over my conscience sellout compromiser country-clubbers!!..

I do not disagree. I simply wanted to post the actual oath and what the RPV has to say about. The only reason I know is because I was trying to find something 2 hours ago and was on the site and saw it.

Again, I'm not defending the policy, just posting the facts.

Simply a statement that you’re participating in the Republican Primary in good faith.

No, but it’s the best we can do until we get registration by party

We do not have party registration here. In fact, we require very little to vote here.

I honestly do not care. I doubt it will stop any liberals or paultards from messing with the primary process but it does not bother me at all.

It would have been less controversial if they had worded it: I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support a candidate of the Republican Party for nominee and will vote for this candidate or one like him in the party for President. I guess it is not so simple.

What if you refused to sign it? Would you be denied your right to vote? What if you didn’t sign it and then insisted on being allowed to vote? Would they deny you?

“What if you refused to sign it? Would you be denied your right to vote? What if you didn’t sign it and then insisted on being allowed to vote? Would they deny you?”

The Mission: Present the paper pusher with your own contract for him or her to sign as to what part of the bargain the Republican Party will in turn honor.

Perhaps it should start with a definition of “Republican.” Aww heck, make ‘em define “is” while you’re at it.

Assuming that anyone would take you seriously and sign, rest assured that *that* piece of paper will be worth no more than what they’ve demanded of you to sign.

Alternatively, point out that poll taxes and proof of literacy (or property ownership) as prerequisites to voting were outlawed as unconstitutional years ago. Don’t argue, gist fold yore arms, squire yore jaw and look offended. Pruttend it beneathe yore dignitee to conversate yore lack of reading skilz an you will only be mollyfied by been aloud 2 make yore mark (”X”) on the dotted line like all the edumacated peepele thats no bettern yew.
