Mystery, climate-saving invention to be unveiled at swanky dinner
Engadget ^ | November 30th 2007 | Donald Melanson

While some past pronouncements of world-changing inventions haven't exactly panned out as promised, this latest one will at least have a pretty large stage on which to prove itself, with none other than Al Gore and others paying £1,000 or more apiece in the audience. As you might expect, however, things are being kept as vague as possible ahead of the big unveiling, which is set to go down later today in London. One of the few apparently clued in in the matter, British Inventors' Society founder Kane Kramer, would only go so far as to describe it as "a new science, a Super Material," adding that, "It would be 80 per cent cheaper than any alternative means of production, and it will contribute in a major way to reducing climate change." So, it's "something," but we'll just have to wait and see if it delivers as advertised.

Good article.

I’ll let them cover my roof with it for a test!

LOL, I don’t get it. What does that accomplish other than up his drag coefficient number?

Are the inventors going to ride in on Segways?

More imprtantly, will Algore and his entourage be showing up in big, gas-guzzling SUV's .......again?

Are the inventors going to ride in on Segways?

The Segway was the first thing that sprang to mind for me. It's a pretty neat gadget, but it was way over-hyped. Its max speed of 15 mph and max range of about an hour keep it from shaking the world. As does the $5000 price point. If it sold for a few hundred, I'd own one. I'm fairly young and fairly healthy, and at five grand, with its speed and range limitations, I'd rather buy a bicycle,

What's much more interesting is the iBot. It's a wheelchair, stabilized with gyroscopes like the Segway -- when they were in development the two projects wee code-named "Fred" and Ginger" after the eponymous Astaire and Rogers. The iBot lifts its occupant up to an adult's standing height and it can climb stairs.

Another "200 MPG Carbureator" invention!

You old fogey. Carburetor? I haven't seen one of those in years. All the cool kids have fuel-injection, or diesel, or both.

Yes, I have pulled the choke open and sprayed ether down the throat of the carburetor to get a car to start. I've even dipped my fingers in gasoline and flicked it to prime the carb when I didn't have a can of ether handy. But not in a number of years.

"...It’s a GIANT PATIO UMBRELLA that will be hoisted above the Earth to help keep the temperature even..."

Maybe thirty years ago, I saw a Popular Science article that addressed a reflectorized mylar "web". It would be "spun up" in synchronous orbit between Sun and Earth to reduce the Sun's energy upon Earth.

I think it would work just fine; however, what temperature would the 6.2 billion of us want? The Russians want the climate warmer in Siberia, and devised a mirror in space—a space heater, as it were.

It will revolutionize transportation. I remember hearing this about what turned out to be that:

This new invention is going to be another Segway or Cold Fusion.

Let me guess, this “material” will run a perpetual motion machine and probably also cure baldness, give you your astrological reading, and make you a cup of coffee. The global warming fanatics will believe any gimmick.

Let’s see....Gore-Tex has already been invented. So has Gorbachev. Flash Gorden is copyrighted.

My guess is it’s a new fartless hippy gorp (trail mix).

It's past the "swanky dinner".

Where is the earth-shattering news of global importance?

Is Mr. Kane really a Nigerian oil ministry official?

Has Mr. Kane realized a loophole in the anti-slavery laws to facilitate an 80% cheaper means of production?

Does Captain/Admiral Kirk know about this?
