Frontier justice in an online world? (MySpace suicide case)
The Seattle Times ^ | November 23, 2007 | P.J. Huffstutter

Posted on 12/01/2007 6:57:12 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

The secret was revealed six weeks later: Neighbor mother Lori Drew had pretended to be 16-year-old "Josh" to gain the trust of Meier, who had been fighting with Drew's daughter, according to police records and Meier's parents.

After their daughter's death, Tina and Ron Meier begged other neighbors to keep the story private. Let the local police and the FBI conduct their investigations in privacy, they pleaded.

But after waiting for criminal charges to be filed against Drew, neighbors learned that local and federal prosecutors could not find a statute applicable to the case.

The community's patience dried up. Furious neighbors — and in the wake of recent media reports, an outraged public — are taking matters into their own hands.

In an outburst of virtual vigilantism, readers of blogs listed the Drews' home address, personal phone numbers, e-mail addresses and photographs of the couple.

Dozens of people allegedly have called local businesses that work with the Drew family's advertising-booklet company and flooded the phone lines this week at a local discount department store where Curt Drew reportedly works.

"I posted that — where Curt works. I'm not ashamed to admit that," said Trever Buckles, 40, a neighbor whose two teenage boys grew up with Meier. "Why? Because there's never been any sense of remorse or public apology from the Drews, no 'maybe we made a mistake.' "

Local teenagers and residents protest just steps from their tiny porch. A fake 911 call, claiming a man had been shot inside the Drew home, sent police to surround the one-story house. People drive through the neighborhood in the middle of the night, screaming, "Murderer!"

This has really become a big story. And Lori Drew has become one of the villians of the nation.

Wow. I have mixed emotions about this. It was a despicable act, but couldn’t the girl just ignore computer messages from “Josh?” When I was growing up, you couldn’t make people just shut up and go away by simply clicking your mouse, the way you can today.

And really, can you blame someone for the suicide of another?

It kind of seems like this cheapens the evil deeds of REAL murderers, who take a life up close and in person.

Seriously, this kid committed suicide over some mean computer messages.

I’m thinking she had other issues, too.

Unbelievable that they have no remorse over what happened, and I’m shocked that the prosecutors haven’t at least tried a creative use of on-line predator laws.

As a parent, I could never have been as patient as these parents have been and would have likely done things that would have landed me in jail by now.

I read one of the longer stories on it a few weeks back, and I didn't get the impression that the Drews were suffering at all.

I'm somewhat confused as to the mother being the instigator of the whole sordid hoax. I thought it was the daughter.

And then, the part about the, what was it, a foosball table?

True, but, this was an adult who deliberately impersonated a child in order to post messages to another child, and played "Josh" as being romatically interested in this girl in order to troll her for information. Pretty despicable.

"prosecutors could not find a statute.."

As long as the word penis wasn't used then no harm, no foul, right prosecutors?

Yes, she did have other issues. She had a history of depression. That was no secret; the Drews were aware of it. Which makes what they did all the more despicable.

The kid didn’t commit suicide over some mean computer messages. She was tricked into thinking this “guy” was interested in her romantically. Once that emotional hook was in that heartless bitch Lori Drew sent a series of messages that were very ugly. Apparently the girl thought this boy who she was falling in love with was now going to publically mock her. That’s a hell of a load to put on a teenager that you KNOW has a history of emotional problems.

Ms Drew created a fictional character solely to torment an emotionaly vulnerable teenager because she was angry at her. She had numerous opportunites to rethink this incredibly cruel and manipulative ruse but she proceeded to up the ante until the bitter end. I hope she carries that stigma and suffers for it for the rest of her life

My son and I were talking about this story tonight, along the lines of so far there is no prosecutable crime, and in the old days society had a way of dealing with people who crossed the line of what was acceptable behavior.

Aside from the bogus 9/11 call I applaud the neighbor’s for their activist outrage.

“And really, can you blame someone for the suicide of another?”

Not legally, but society has a way of castigating those who cross certain behavior boundaries. Used to be that running around with a married man was enough to provoke outrage. Now it’s diddling little kids and maliciously manipulating minors till they kill themselves that sets people off.

No doubt she had other issues, but the behavior of this alleged adult is inexcusable. The immaturity, maliciousness, and evil intent of this woman is almost beyond belief.

There’s just no excuse for it, period.

Agreed, Skip.
And jim35, while I might be wrong, it appears you have not been the parent of a teenager, in this “age of technology”, and that you also opine on topics, without actually reading any of the readily available information first.

Lori Drew is reaping exactly what she sowed, and deserves zero sympathy from anyone, IMHO.
If she can not be legally prosecuted for her maliciously planned and vicsious personal attack against a minor child, none of the Internet denizens attacking her can be prosecuted for their reactions, in the electronic realm of the www. She richly deserves to be publicly outed as an evil woman, unfit to live in the community where she committed a premeditated and heinous act of mentally torturing a child.

I wonder why Chris Hanson from Dateline doesn’t show up to their house using the transcripts, and then telling the mother, “ok, you are free to go.” knowing the inevitable will happen as soon as they leave their residence to escape, they are swarmed by cops yelling, “Get down!Down on the ground!!!!”
