On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee's candidacy rests on serial non sequiturs: I am a Christian, therefore I am a conservative, therefore whatever I have done or propose to do with "compassionate," meaning enlarged, government is conservatism. And by the way, anything I denote as a "moral" issue is beyond debate other than by the uncaring forces of greed.
His is a moralist's version of the intellectual vanity once ascribed to Oxford's Benjamin Jowett:
My name is Jowett
Of Balliol College;
If I don't know it,
It is not knowledge.
Many Iowans think it would be wise to nominate a candidate who, when the Republicans were asked during a debate to raise their hands if they do not believe in evolution, raised his. But, then, Huckabee believes America can be energy independent in 10 years, so he has peculiar views about more than paleontology.
Huckabee combines pure moralism with incoherent populism: He wants Washington to impose a nationwide ban on smoking in public, show more solicitude for Americans of modest means and impose more protectionism, thereby raising the cost of living for Americans of modest means.
Although Huckabee is considered affable, two subliminal but clear enough premises of his Iowa attack on Mitt Romney are unpleasant: The almost 6 million American Mormons who consider themselves Christians are mistaken about that. And - 55 million non-Christian Americans should take note - America must have a Christian president.
snip
If Huckabee succeeds in derailing Romney's campaign by raising a religious test for presidential eligibility, that will be clarifying: In one particular, America was more enlightened a century ago.

George Will endorses Rudy...Rudy and Huckabee are friendly (see last debate)...speculation abounds that Rudy would choose Huck to be his VP in order to throw socons a token and keep them on board...so why does George Will go out of his way to flame Huckabee??????
Huckabee is a fake, a phony and a fraud.
Get out of the race, you fake-phony-2-bit-fraud! /bob grant
I just heard Rush discuss the new Rasmussen poll showing Huckabee gaining ground against Rudy in the national poll.
Then, in a clear reference to Huckabee, Rush said that the Drive-by Media will build up the Republican candidate who THEY think is going to be the easiest to defeat in the general election. Then once the candidates are nominated, they will start to tear down the very same GOP candiate that they praised during the primaries.
ping.
To maintain the appearance of journalistic integretity? Bleah and double bleah.
GO DUNCAN HUNTER!
I don’t much like George Will either. I think he often gets things wrong, or at least sideways.
This is one of those times. The problem with HuckaNanny isn’t his Christianity, it’s his pure, unbridled socialism.
Socialism sucks. Period. Even if pushed by a Baptist Minister.
We all understand that he is a phony and a fraud who would gladly accept a VP spot on a pro baby killing Rudy ticket in order to gain power to enact his Health Fanaticism, and straighten out the fatties and the smokers.
But why does a Rudy teammate like Will, bash Huckabee. Of course George Will is right on this one but....
Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr.
Hillary Rodham Clinton,
Christopher John Dodd
Johnny Reid Edwards
Maurice Robert Gravel
Dennis John Kucinich
Barack Hussein Obama
William Blaine Richardson III
Rudolph William Louis Giuliani
Michael Dale Huckabee
John Sidney McCain III
Ronald Ernest Paul
Willard Mitt Romney
George and Rudy have to keep the Huckster in his place (as VP that is).
Scary.
+1
I wonder when his campaign will finally get some traction.
I think Will agrees with you 100%. I didn't see where he criticized Christianity or Christians in this piece at all.
I agree!
Maybe. But it seemed typical sideways-Will to me. Made more of an issue of not raising his hand for evolution than raising Arkansas taxes.
The liberal MSM must really think Social Conservatives are stupid. They keep pitching and pimping the Huckster hoping somebody will buy.
“George Will endorses Rudy...Rudy and Huckabee are friendly (see last debate)...speculation abounds that Rudy would choose Huck to be his VP in order to throw socons a token and keep them on board...so why does George Will go out of his way to flame Huckabee??????”
Answer: Will should never have been anything but a sportswriter. He is way out of his league.
Rasmussen daily tracking polls today showed Guilianni at 20% and Huckabee at 17%. That’s where this attack comes from . . . Will the shill for his man Rudy.
Dunno...but he’s right about Huck.
Huckabee appeals to the segment of Evangelicals that feel that being Christian and in politics means you must impose those values by legislative fiat.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
At least Romney had a conversion. What he needs to remember is that you don’t just get baptized or born again as a Christian and then become Pope.
You’re 100% correct. My point, and Will’s, is that his SUPPORTERS are basically taking the approach that the “most Christian” guy is always the best candidate and either LIKE his socialism, don’t care about it, or don’t know about it.
Then, in a clear reference to Huckabee, Rush said that the Drive-by Media will build up the Republican candidate who THEY think is going to be the easiest to defeat in the general election. Then once the candidates are nominated, they will start to tear down the very same GOP candiate that they praised during the primaries.................
Oh, we know. We got a copy of the secret Memo that the MSM has been circulating around...
MEMO
TO: Traditionalist rural Christian voters
FROM: LA Times, NY Times, Washington Post, Salon, AP, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN
RE: Mike Huckabee
DATE: November 29, 2007
Dear Bible Thumping toothless rednecks,
Please remember to vote for the tax raising, environmentalist wacko, nanny state sheeple controlling, smoker banning, open border third world America killing, Socialist candidate we tell you to vote for in the primary....Mike Huckabee.
He is pro life and he talks about Jesus. That should be good enough for you.
DO NOT VOTE FOR REAL CONSERVATIVES LIKE FRED THOMPSON OR DUNCAN HUNTER. THAT WOULD DERAIL OUR QUEST TO TURN AMERICA INTO A THIRD WORLD SOCIALIST STATE.
Thank you,
The Elitist left wing media
“But why does a Rudy teammate like Will, bash Huckabee. Of course George Will is right on this one but....”
George Will would be happy with any liberal squish RINO.
Rooty and Mutt both fit his choice.
Huckabee has a poor track record on issues that should be among the most important to conservatives and patriots. He would be unable to clearly differentiate himself from FRudy McRomney on the important issues of growth of government and illegal immigration.
The shame is that one of the two candidates who offer a true conservative, small government platform - Tom Tancredo or Duncan Hunter - couldn’t have been the one to place second in the Iowa straw poll and be propelled to the point that Huckabee is now in.
Regardless of who the GOP candidate is in November, it’s looking like conservative voters are going to be in for another disappointment.
FRudy McRomnee offer nanny state, big government, open border amnesty with a pinch of socialized health care, and conservatives and patriots are looking at another four or eight years of watching the country they love follow the path of every once-great nation.
Hunter will POTUS one day. He just needs some national exposure as a Guv or VP. Hard to go from the House to the White House.
You include Fred in that list. Why?
“why does George Will go out of his way to flame Huckabee??????”
George Will is his own man. I don’t think the circumlocution of pairing Huck and Rudy enters into it.
Maybe he likes Rudy because they are both Yankees fans, and as an elite and conservative intellectual, Rudy’s metro-conservatism hits his vibes better than a southern populist.
Huck and Rudy are like dipolar oppositions in the GOP big tent. It’s a “potassium chloride” ticket, one the social liberal security/crime-con, the other the tax-and-spend-and-compassionate-on-crime social conservative.
Be that as it may, I wouldn’t want to be on the end of Will’s rapier pen.
Excellent points. Truthfully, I fear for the boozers, they won’t stand a chance against the Huckster!
Pardon me whilst I go and puke.
It sounds like George Will has no plans ever to seek the presidency of Bryan College in Dayton, TN (named for Wiliam Jennings Bryan).
Ping.
I understand your confusion. This is one of the most confusing, irritating primaries I’ve ever witnessed.
Maybe your right. Maybe Will just introduced Rudy at CPAC and wrote some nice things about him but is not actively part of the campaign.
Maybe there is no conspiracy and it is what it is and Will is just writing what he thinks. So the conspiracy is...there is no conspiracy but they want us to think there is a conspiracy. Geez, I need some professional help :-)
It was really confusing until it finally sunk into my thick head that there are only 3 conservatives running and only one polling in double digits, Fred. I’ve been mailing him cases of Red Bull in lieu of cash contributions.
Maybe you can answer this question because somebody else brought it up...who since Lincoln went from the House to the WH?

Further thoughts on this theme ...
Fact: Romney governed more conservatively than Huckabee.
Examples: Huckabee wanted in-state tuition for illegals, Romney vetoed it. Huckabee solved a budget crunch with sales tax increase; Romney cut taxes and spending during budget crunch.
Romney’s shifts on positions have been no larger than the Huckabee “I-was-for-DREAM-Act-but-now-I’m-a-maybe-on-it” dance, or any other number of issues. Yes, it is scary to see “compassionate conservatism II” in action because we got the GOP majority derailed on 3 simple issues - competence/corruption, spending, illegal immigration. AND WHERE IS HUCKABEE MOST WEAK? All 3!!
The big picture point is this - Romney is running more conservatively for President than Huckabee on these issues because that’s how he intends to govern as President.
Romney is better than Huck on exactly those issues where our compassionate conservatism has hurt us.
Because I think he's a left-leaning moderate. His political career, lobbying career and his alliances all paint him as a moderate who will grow government as a status quo candidate.
FRed will be the next George W. Bush - a strong leader against the Islamic threat and a huge disappointment to conservatives who are desperate to see limits placed on the size and scope of the federal government.
His down-home way is appealing, and the one time I met him I liked him very much. But I think there's a track record of supporting initiatives that grow government.
There are only two good conservatives in this race, and I don't think either of them stand a chance.
Huck is a proud ultra-leftist. His gleeful support of Kyoto should raise red flags to anyone who cherishes Liberty and capitalism. If Huck has any decency and honor, he would run as a Rat -- the home of rabid Socialist. Huck is a disgusting Fraud. I would like to ask where do "free will" come into the equation in his sick desire to impose nanny state solutions to everything.
Huck's first instinct to solve so called moral problems (i.e. smoking, illegals, etc) with the "force" of government doesn't sound very Christian to me. As a Christian, I am offended at how little faith the Huckster has in people "doing the right thing" because it is the moral thing to do, choices made freely.
Socialism is a cancer that will inevitably destroy any free society. Socialism at it's core is anti-Christian. Huck's rabid support of Socialism is sickening.
I think things would be different here. Fred understands that he was a necesary candidate because of grass root conservative support and if he wins it will be because of that support.
Well said.
I have a great respect for George Will. He is writing us what he thinks, and on Huck, he thinks cogently.
Dick Morris, the Huckster shill and lousy weather-vane prognosticator, on the other hand ... can go suck an egg. With toes, of course.
But what about Keith Olbermann, he has at least 9 regular viewers?
