Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says he's as conservative "as anybody could hope to be, or want to be, or needs to be" in defending a record that has come under attack now that he holds front-runner status in Iowa.
(snip)
Appearing before reporters, Huckabee was asked about a mixed record on taxes during the time he was governor of Arkansas from 1996 until last January and said that "most everybody who's ever governed'" would have the same kind of record.
"Ronald Reagan raised taxes [as California governor] by a billion dollars in 1967 after he campaigned in 1966 saying he wouldn't. He cut taxes as president. He also raised taxes as president. Ronald Reagan also signed the amnesty bill that has created such grief for us," Huckabee said.
"When I hear people say, 'Well, Ronald Reagan would never ' they might want to do a little history," the former Arkansas governor said. "But does anybody in the Republican Party call Ronald Reagan a liberal?
(snip)
Huckabee also contended Reagan's presidential bids in 1976 and in 1980 had "rankled" the GOP establishment. "He did not have the support of the insiders," Huckabee said of Reagan. " Neither do I, and in many ways that may be a good thing."
(snip)
With some critics calling his credentials as a conservative into question, Huckabee said he believed in lower taxes, "a strong adherence" to gun-owner rights, "the sanctity of life," a strong military as a deterrent, and the "Jeffersonian model" of limited central government that gives more power to the states.
"All of those are conservative bedrocks," he said. "When people call me anything but that, I think they have to be quite creative in coming to a different conclusion to end up saying I'm anything but a conservative."

The Tribune. The liberal MSM all are pushing Huckabee-—LA Times, NY Times, Liberal Op-ed writers, etc. Are they now looking out for the best interests of the GOP or are they trying to screw with us? You decide.

It’s an easy call, for me.
Huckabee? No thank you!
I think its Hucksterbee pandering to illegals. And being a liberal.
The liberal media loves candidates like this
I think they are trying to have both bases covered. Hillary may not win, so find another Arkanasas governor-mansion former resident liberal....Hucksterbee. They get the liberal they want at 1600 PA Ave
IMHO, the Huckabee campaign is a real story which deserves to be covered. Huckabee is a strong social and fiscal conservative which great communication skills and leadership experience. He has come from the back of the back without funding and is shooting up quickly in the polls. The media coverage Huckabee has gotten so far is nothing compared to what he will get if he wins in Iowa next.
Being pro-life makes Mike think he can be liberal on all of the other major issues.
No thank you, indeed!!
This just in:
Bill Clinton defends his record on perjury.
O.J. Simpson defends his record on murder.
Ted Kennedy defends his record on driving
McCain defends his record on Amnesty for Illegals
John Murtha defends his record on supporting the troops.
Etc., etc.,
Since when is advocating a disregard for the rule of law consistant with being a social conservative. “Chuck Huck”
Yep, if he keeps winning he'll be their main man until (and if) he goes up against the dem nominee.
Well, I don't use the words "hope", "want", or "need" when I talk politics.
But then again, my politics aren't driven by an insatiable need to become POTUS at any cost.
Well, maybe to Hillary Clinton or Hugo Chavez.
Dano, just because the Huckabee haters are the first to this thread I hope you won’t let them get you down. My husband and I put our new Huckabee bumper stickers on our vehicles today and are proud of it!!
“...Huckabee is a strong social and fiscal conservative...”
Social conservative, yes, fiscal conservative, not by a long shot. He’s a fiscal populist constantly whining about the salaries of business executives, fear mongering about Wall street, and raising taxes like a drunken liberal/socialist. He’s a nanny state elitist. He gives up cigarettes wants to ban tobacco products. He loses weight wants to mandate healthy meals. Please, we are grown ups. We’ll figure out how we want to live and live that way.
Just say “no” to the “Huck”.
