Romney's Faith No Big Deal (The problem isn't Mormonism. It's Mitt.)
Boston Herald ^ | December 4, 2007 | Michael Graham

Posted on 12/04/2007 3:48:16 AM PST by suspects

I can’t believe anyone would vote against Mitt Romney because of religion.

I can’t believe any American would withhold a vote out of irrational fear of Mormonism.

I also can’t believe in ghosts, Area 51 or a U.S. government conspiracy to assassinate JFK.

In other words, I'm not your average American. And, unfortunately for Romney, when he gives “The Speech” on Thursday, he won’t be talking to me. He’ll be talking to them.

I've never understood how Mitt’s Mormonism could put off voters. Mitt Romney: Nice guy, weird religion. What’s the problem?

For a while, the Romney campaign agreed. When polling in June 2006 showed 35 percent of voters wouldn’t vote for a Mormon, the Romney camp rolled on. A year later, a Harris poll found that 29 percent of Americans would be unlikely to vote Mormon. Still no problem.

Then last week the Des Moines Register poll had Arkansas’ Mike Huckabee over Romney by 5 percent.

Now that’s a problem.

The fact is, there is no constitutional or political threat from a Mormon president. Electing a devout Book of Mormon thumper would be like electing a militant vegan: Annoying at dinner parties, but hardly a danger to the Republic.

People against electing Mormons have no clue what they’re talking about. Romney’s problem is that “people who have no clue what they’re talking about” make up a solid one-third of the American electorate.

Right now, there’s a registered voter in Iowa saying: “I ain’t votin’ for Mitt Romney, I don’t care how many wives he has.” Rational people laugh, but there’s also a guy in New Hampshire saying: “If we’d get on the gold standard and abandon our support for Israel, we’d never have to worry about another attack from the Tri-Lateral Commission!”

That guy’s name is Ron Paul.

Amen to that.

If I were a Mitt supporter, I’d be shaken by this analysis. I’d be asking, what is it about Mitt (if it’s not the Mormonism) that people don’t like.

And I can imagine how the Mitt supporters are feeling right now (those that have the sense to get the message in this article). Because I’m a Thompson supporter and I’m pretty shaken by events these days. It must be nice to support a candidate who’s actually rising in the polls. The problem is, I can’t support a candidate, like Huckabee, who holds a bible in one hand and a LaRaza flag in the other, and is a socialist as well.

IMO, the way Mitt made his money is equivalent to the way John Edwards made his.......screwing the little guy.

Good title. The problem is Mitt, not Mormonism. Ron Paul isn’t the solution. Ever.

If Mitt was a solid conservative while he was governor, his religion would be a total non-issue.

The sad thing is that Mitt never would have been elected governor if he'd been "a solid conservative". Sorry, but I've seen that conservatism doesn't "always work every time it's tried" because in many parts of the country dominated by urban thinking, conservatism isn't given a chance to even come close to working. Maybe I don't like it but it is what it is.

Mitt has never been anything close to Conservative. He got elected as Gov because he is a liberal.

Mitt got elected as Gov because he wasn't as liberal as the usual candidates in Mass and he wasn't as conservative as the candidates Mass voters (and most blue state voters) fear.

Myself and most principled Christians would never vote for a Mormon. The religion is a cult. Mormonism should be looked upon as Hinduism, multiple God’s, or Muslim, view of Jesus and other beliefs which attack Christianity.

I suggest you tell someone who cares. I can honestly say my personal beliefs have never been attacked by a Mormon.

You care, its why you responded! Then to state it the way you did, ... tells all.

My beliefs and Christianity beliefs are attacked when Joe Smith state God was a liar, when the Joe Smith Religion stated, God removed Himself from the earth from 40AD until Joe Smith was out rock hunting one day in upstate New York in the 1800s.

How dare he /Joe Smith state my great great ... grand father was not a Christian! I have writings and a Bible based down. Smith and mormonism is right or almost 2000 years of Christians and Christianity is right. But when Smith in the 1800s states what he has ... my friend that is evil and an attack.

If you do not feel attacked or Christianity attacked, well ... thats your call.

Have a great day.

A Republican can't win the mayorship in Philadelphia, let alone a conservative. The political dynamics are pretty similar in Mass.

While it may be in order to win in Mass. Mitt had to run as a Liberal, it caused credibility problems with the conservative base, which MAY cost Mitt his bid for the presidency. We shall see.

“Only the police should have guns.”

I find it interesting you did not just state you are a Romney supporter, and maybe close ties to mormons. Vs. this being the standard come to Romney defense.
I especially liked how you defended Romney as doing what he did, as in supporting abortion and homos, in his bid for Mass. Gov.

You have a good day. BTW, my previous post stated “attacked” not persecuted. Learn to read.
