A posh food store in New York's Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan "Delicious for Hanukkah," the current Jewish religious holiday.
The non-kosher labelling was spotted at the weekend by Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, who decided instead of alerting management to take a picture of the unorthodox sign and post it on the Internet.
"I just thought it was funny," Shapiro, who described herself as an unobservant Jew, told the New York Post. "I wasn't offended in any way. I just thought, here's somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat."
By the time Shapiro returned to the store on Tuesday, the first night of Hanukkah, the signs had vanished, the newspaper reported.
A manager at the Balducci's gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk.
Pork and shellfish are among the foods considered unclean under Jewish law.
Actually, if you look at the webpage where the author first posted her pictures of the hams, she also has pictures of her breakfast of bacon and eggs.
Still laughing out loud!!!!

OTOH, I’ve always found the custom of having a Christmas ham very jarring.
Is this any way to celebrate the birth of a Jew????
That’s good - I LIKE that - RAMADAN HAMS!!!!
I always figured that pork was taken off the “fine foods” list because if it was not cooked correctly, it could kill you. Trichinosis, you know.
Of course, cured and prepared hams eliminate that problem now.
Any other reasons to eliminate pork from the religious diet?
She does. This reminds me of a story about Christmas in Japan where retailers were very, very confused. Someone spotted a crucified Santa Claus in a storefront window! Just the idea of that mistake is funny!
Pigs don't chew a cud.
We don't do ham, but steak and , umm, err, shrimp...never mind....
I liked the comment about MuHAMmad.
Mirriam-Webster:
Main Entry: kosher Function: noun Date: 1886 : the observance of kosher practices
No, I'll celebrate any holiday that includes dinner.
I wonder if Jews buy Christmas presents?
Yes, a friend does my Christmas shopping for me because they can get it wholesale....(sorry, can't resist a straight line).
PS - I knew Jews who loved to eat Bacon.
Me too, but I find most most observe at least the basics.
But true - it was a very odd sign.
I've read that what makes people laugh is that it is a reaction to figuring out something is wrong. I.e., observant Jews don't eat pork products in this case.
Shrimp? Lobsta goes better with steak...
Unfortunately, the perpetually offended enjoy making life a living hell for others.
Reminds me of a very Jewish cook we had in the Army in the '60s - He was serving "Kosher Ham" when I asked him how he figured it was Kosher, he quickly replied - "It's from a circumcised pig".
Yeah, a typical ham-fisted response.
Maybe you should send them this card:
Long, long time ago, I remember being taught that a lot of religous dietary laws go back to the days when government was run by the religous leaders and that the practices were more food safety than theology.
‘A posh food store in New York’s Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan “Delicious for Hanukkah,” the current Jewish religious holiday. ‘
Not surprising, the same store was offering automatic coffee maker filters as ‘the perfect headgear for Hanukkah parties!’
(chuckle)
Good pun.
