Squeezed by Retail Rivals, CompUSA to Shut Down
The Wall Street Journal (excerpt) ^ | December 7, 2007

Excerpt -

CompUSA Inc. said it has been sold to Gordon Brothers Group, a restructuring firm that will wind-down the retailer's operations and sell off its assets. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Dallas-based CompUSA, which is controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu, said its 103 retail stores will remain open and staffed during the holiday season as it works to sell off some stores and its Internet operations. The company has struggled with increased competition and had been looking at stratetgic alternatives.

That’s going to leave a large void in a lot of small cities. Best Buy and Circuit City don’t cut it for components or sofwtare selection.

Hm, one is compelled to wonder if there will be any outstanding bargains to be had during the sell-off period. . .

Ya, like I’d like to buy computer stuff from a business that’s going to close its doors right after I buy it...

It would have to be discounted pretty significantly to even consider it.

BFD. In the Chicago ‘burbs, they were just a retail outlet. None of their salespeople knew anything about the software or hardware products. It was a like a Toys ‘R Us, but you had to know what you wanted BEFORE you went in because the help was, well,,,no help at all.

Just my opinion of course.

We have Comp-USA, but I would be thrilled to get Fry’s in its place.
Go Fry’s!
There are only a few other options, because Comp-USA never has what we need and Best Buy has terrible customer service so we never shop there at all.

Yeah, I remember that one too and had forgotten it was the first one. It was on Marsh Lane, north of Beltline as I recall.

Highly doubt it. I went to a few of their “Store Closing” blowout, price slashing, events.

Their reduced, blowout, slashed prices were a few pennies under what MSRP is for the rest of the world. I was pretty amazed that their stated MSRPs were actually inflated.
