The fatal blow may have come yesterday when Dell decided to go with Best Buy for their retail outlet.

But doesn't Best Buy already sell Gateway?

We have two of them now.

Newegg is still a better answer, if you know what you want. If you want to look at stuff first, or want instant gratification (it’s the American Way!), it’s great having Fry’s handy.

I'm not sure. I think they sell HP computers - but I generally avoid that section of the store.

My local CompUSA in Corpus Christi was originally a Computer City before CompUSA bought the whole chain from Tandy. Compared to CompUSA, Computer City was horrilbly mismanaged by Tandy. They had a philosophy of buying large quantities of items and letting them sit on the shelves for years at their original prices. I remember them buying a wall of double speed CD-ROM drives that must have sat there for three years as much higher performance CD-ROM drives became available at a fraction of the price Tandy wanted to charge. It’s a bit like getting economies of scale by buying car loads of ripe bananas. Any economies of scale were wiped out by the perishable nature of the goods as they sat on the shelves and became obsolete.

The CompUSA's up in my area have become absolutely awful over the past few years - just a shadow of their former selves. I will certainly not miss them. From about 1995 to 2003 or so, I was a regular customer. But they cut way back on their software selection and other areas of the store were gutted as well. The floor walkers were absolute morons for the most part, they didn't know anything about what the store sold, which makes me think they were retreads from Radio Shack - another lousy chain of stores.

I pretty much get all my computer stuff online anyhow or at a local independent computer store which is ten times better than any CompUSA.

Another thing I never liked about CompUSA was the thug they stationed at the exit to check your receipts on the way out. All they ever did was look at the receipt and grunt. I doubt they even knew how to read.

CompUSA had their problems, but I will miss them. They did carry some parts that are generally not available at the other big-box stores. It was good to have a place where I could walk in and get what I wanted immediately, rather than having to wait for UPS to deliver it.

I remember SoftWarehouse in Addison back in the 80s - thanks for the info.

I hope Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu is losing his shirt on this deal.

I wonder what will happen to the “service plans” they sold to customers with the promise that, if an item failed, the customer could walk in and get an immediate exchange.

It opens a huge door for Fry’s.

It's even a bigger door for Microcenter

I have been shopping both for years and Microcenter beats Fry’s all to hell for quality of service, is equal on bargain prices and a little better on the day to day stuff

I would have to agree. I’m ten minutes from Fry’s, Micro Center, and CompUSA in the Chicago Burbs and shop all three for my office. Usually the purchase is made at micro center in the end.

Dittos on newegg. If you are a PC hardware junkie, there’s really no other alternative. I do get things like monitors and PC cases at Fry’s though because of ease of return/heavy item shipping costs. CompUSA never kept up with newer hardware.

In Texas, altex carries an even bigger selection of computer and networking parts.

I agree with Microcenter, they just aren’t around in very many locations. My nearest one is 4 hours / 200 miles away.

There is one in Fairfax, Virginia. It's usually full of techies who want to buy stuff now rather than waiting for UPS or FedEx, and locals who need help usually show up to ask questions of the techies.

The prices are decent, service is fairly good, and the atmosphere is great.

Dallas-based CompUSA, which is controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu

Nice to see that fat Mexican sh*tbag take a big loss.
