Sorry to see this

Here in Knoxville, CompUSA has been
a good electronics retailer

We don’t have Fry’s here
I gotta go to Atlanta to find one...

I quit going to CompUSA after I discovered MicroCenter here in Houston. They carry almost the same merchandise, but better displayed and better sales service.

Looks like my personal boycott worked!

Me too! First, they bought Computer City and closed it down, then they bought Good Guys and closed them down. I haven't shopped there in years, but I'm sorry that they won't be around to keep Fry's a little more honest.

BFD. In the Chicago ‘burbs, they were just a retail outlet. None of their salespeople knew anything about the software or hardware products.

The last time I shopped at a CompUSA (wireless router) the sales girl who took care of me was quite knowledgeable. She was also quite pumped up over the fact that she'd given her notice and was due to start at the local Apple store the next week.

I think we’ll be okay here when the new Apple Store opens at the Promenade at Chenal. I drove past it the other day, and it’s coming along well. They’ll have a nine-screen IMAX theatre too.

Actually, the first one was south of Beltline somewhere in that warehouse area. I bought my first copy of Lotus 1-2-3 there in ‘84 or ‘85.

The closeout deals at the CompUSA stores they closed earlier this year were underwhelming. They didn’t get to 50% off until the weekend they were closing the doors.

By then all they had left were overpriced ink and thousands of copies of Vista.

Why were you boycotting them?

I bought a computer with a service contract there, years ago. Brought the computer in for replacement of a broken key. They wanted 2-3 weeks to fix it and had to send it back to the manufacturer to do so, in spite of their having an in store "service department".

I asked for a refund on my "service Contract" and it never materilized. I never went back.

Well, I can understand why she was pumped up. If she actually knows what she is talking about she might get more satisfaction elsewhere. The group I ran into was not even interested in knowing where things were in their own store. To be fair though, they did know what the word ‘cable’ meant. Other than that, they were not interested in helping out.

I’ve been in CompUSA twice and their prices were absurd.

The fatal blow may have come yesterday when Dell decided to go with Best Buy for their retail outlet.

Thanks for the answer, I was really wondering -OfficeMax is being boycotted for caving into CAIR demands, you probably already know that, so I wondered.

But you did say “personal”, sounds like poor customer service - I have heard others say that was a staple of COMPUSA.

"There’s always New Egg."

The best source for all things computer IMO. I have never seen such good prices and service from an online retailer. Newegg rules!!!! (They didn't even have to pay me to say this. )

I remember shopping at Softwarehouse in the mid 1980's at its original location way out on Westheimer in Houston years before they renamed it to CompUSA.
