Huckabee moves ahead in poll (Mason Dixon Iowa Poll: Huck 32, Romney 20, FDT 11)

(SNIP)

According to a new McClatchy-MSNBC poll, Huckabee is now the choice of 32 percent of likely GOP voters in the Jan. 3 caucus.

Once-leading Romney is now a distant second with 20 percent. Former senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee has 11 percent.

(SNIP)

Some question if Huckabee could be peaking too soon — his sudden lead is likely to mean that his rivals will target him for attack in ads, debates and speeches, and some 19 percent of GOP voters in Iowa remain undecided.

Brad Coker, the managing director of Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, thinks that Huckabee could turn off many conservatives because his stand on immigration isn’t as hard-line as others and he raised taxes in Arkansas.

FDT is within striking distance of Romney.

If Thompson comes in second and Huckabee first Romney is immediately KO'd of the contest and Thompson could pick up many former Romney voters for the rest of the primary campaign.

That’s a pretty good analysis. Thompson seems to be a second choice for almost all of the supporters of the other candidates—I can’t imagine Hunter or Huckabee supporters, for example, going for Giuliani or McCain.

So Huckabee is ahead in Iowa and South Carolina.

“His Iowa numbers are impressive. But look at New Hampshire, where you don’t have that evangelical Christian base,” said Coker.

Hunter and Tancredo will be out before South Carolina, which should be a boost for Thompson of about 4-6 points because Thompson is the strongest major candidate on immigration.

By the time South Carolina is ready to vote, Huckabee’s record should have been attacked which will boost Thompson and prevent Hunter and Tancredo voters from voting for Huck.

Of course, it would be better if Tanc dropped out now and threw his 4-5 points to Thompson in Iowa.

Hunter is as anti-ILLEGAL alien as they come and that is why many of his supporters support him. So it's doubtful Hunter supporters would vote for a pro-ILLEGAL alien huckster like Huckabee.

Thanks for the ping. A couple of weeks ago many here and nationally were claiming that the GOP was down to a two-person race (Romney/Giuliani).

The best way to describe the race so far is “unpredictable,” and I expect that will continue to be the case. It’s wide open — go Thompson!

Describing this election cycle Frank Rich wrote in today's NYT that "What the Beltway calls unthinkable today keeps turning out to be front-page news tomorrow." IMHO, here's an example - at the rate things are going it now actually appears possible that Romney could finish third in Iowa. That was unthinkable a few days ago.

You guys might as well be having a discussion on where to put the deck chairs on a sinking ship. All of these GOP candidates are chasing after the same base of Republicans who voted in 2004 & saw their numbers decline after the 2006 mid-term thumping.

The polls simply aren't factoring in the newly registered Republicans that Ron Paul has brought in.

The link you used does not work. Do you have a working link which goes to the story?

“So it’s doubtful Hunter supporters would vote for a pro-ILLEGAL alien huckster like Huckabee.”

There are plenty of conservative evangelicals in Iowa who hate illegal immigration, yet most of them appear ready to support Hucksterbee because of other social issues.

If Hunter dropped out before Huckabee’s record is exposed there is a risk that some anti-illegal social conservatives could vote for Huckster.

The media is hiding Huckabee’s record because they know he is a weak candidate for the Republicans.

That’s why the internet will be important in getting Huckster’s true record out to voters.

Well, yea, Huckabee would step ahead of Romney in the bible-belt states just by saying,’Gotcha’. Fred Thompson has an illegal alien agenda though and that’s ‘page two’ in the bible-belt states.
