Burglary suspect shot, killed by homeowner (AL)

A burglary suspect was shot and killed Saturday night during an attempted home invasion just outside Cowarts, and a second suspect is in custody.

Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes said the homeowner dialed 911 at 7:41 p.m. reporting two men had broken into his house, located just east of the intersection of Forrester Road and U.S. 84 East, across the road from Ace Hardware.

The homeowner has been identified as Pete T. Webb.

“The homeowner was inside the residence,” said Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes. “Two black males burglarized the residence and he confronted both of them. The homeowner had a handgun and he ordered both men to the floor.”

Hughes said one of the suspects got up from the floor and charged the homeowner.

“One shot was fired by the homeowner,” Hughes said.

The suspects then ran from the house. One was captured by authorities and the other was found lying about 100 yards from the house. He died at the scene in a lot where Grandview Baptist Church is being constructed.

At 10:30 p.m., Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said he has not been notified by authorities.

Just before press time, authorities were having trouble identifying the deceased and the suspect in custody. Deputies said the two might be related or could be brothers.

“We have not IDed them,” said Captain Antonio Gonzales. “We are getting false information from people.”

A woman identified as the victim’s mother, Louise Bostick, was brought to the scene but was unable to approach the victim, Gonzales said. “She was on the scene but was too distraught. She wouldn’t view the body,” he said.

Gonzales said someone reportedly called Bostick to the scene but he is not sure who or how she arrived. A white Cadillac was parked in front of the house just off the roadway. The car was wrapped in yellow crime scene tape.

“We are not sure who the car belongs to,” Gonzales said.

The shooting reportedly took place in the living room of the house at 4550 U.S. 82 East.

Dothan Police Chief John Powell said the details of the burglary will be compared with crime scene evidence from other break-ins and robberies.

A woman identified as the victim’s mother,

I think victim is the wrong word.

“Victim” is most assuredly the wrong work. However, “Dead” is good!

She's not the victim's mother!

She's the perpetrator's mother!

Don't go out looking for homes to rob, you won't have to have your mother come to the scene but be too squeamish to ID your bleeding corpse.

Gee, GMTA.

I'm waiting for the chorus of "He was always such a good boy, they didn't have to SHOOT him . . . "

Once, just once, I would like to hear the relatives say that he was a rotten, trouble-minded boy who wouldn't listen to his mama and got what was coming to him.

Good. Keep it that way. I'm tired of these pity parties for these "wayward youts".

That’s good news. We have a right to protect our lives and those of our family and friends from intruders invading our space with intent to kill.

If I were a robber or burglar, I think I'd get to hell out of Texas. Bad odds for the bad guys.

They should try a real blue state where the citizens are sheeple.

Bad move there Slick. You don't do that when it's at O Dark Thirty with an old Texas granny behind the gun, you sure as Hell don't do it early in the evening with an Alabama good old boy, of whatever ethnicity, behind the gun.

What a numb nut. At least he's removed himself from any further contribution to the gene pool, and we can hope he hadn't made any up til now.

The shot criminal is NOT a victim, but a shot criminal.

Why publish the homeowners’ name and address? To make it easier for the criminals’ friends and associates to exact revenge? To make it easier for the likes of Quannel X to ruin his life. Even in Texas, our media are despicable.

Dothan, AL seems to be the only place of any size nearby. It's down in the Southeast corner of the state, not far north of the Florida line, and even closer to the Georgia line.

I would too, but I think we'll both be waiting a long time.

It’s not Texas, it’s Alabama. Couldn’t figure out why my map couldn’t find Cowarts, Texas, then I went to the site, clicked on “contact us” and noticed it was in Alabama. Of course it was probably the Houston county that confused the issue.
