Firearms Advice - Coyote Problem (Vanity)
Vanity ^ | 12/09/2007 | Moose Dung

Posted on 12/09/2007 8:32:13 PM PST by Moose Dung

Sorry for posting this in the main area, but I need some advice quickly.

Over the past few weeks I've been having a real coyote problem. We're in the San Joaquin Valley and have always had issues with the coyotes, but this year seems to be expecially bad (even traveling in small packs, which I've never seen before). I need some recommendations on the proper weapon to deal with these varmints.

Every week or so drink a six pack of beer (or gallon of cranberry juice) and then walk the perimiter of your property, taking a leak every 25 yards or so.

I hear rat bait laced burger patties work well also.

There was a pic here not too long ago of the new IED......a 4x8 sheet of plywood made too look like a mouse trap with a cold beer on it in a tent city near them.......

Funny picture.

Also I seem to remember a bigger version of the speedhook snares for coyote size critters.......

Here is the concept....for fishing.

Saw that when it was posted, spurted my beer! Would look even funnier with a coyote laying under the snapped wire like a mouse with X's in the eyes.

On my buddy'd 600 acre farm, we use M1A's from on top of the hay stack. They go airborne when hit.

The 223 round is hands down the best here in Wyoming it is the round for varmits. The Ruger Mini 14 for the money is the best choice it is cheaper than the AR 15 and more reliable and because it was a favorite for law enforcement has a strong aftermarket following as in light mounts laser sights etc. Spend some time with a good gunsmith/dealer and you will have a combination that will send the survivors to a safer part of the county like the home owned by a Democrat

In my younger and more rural days, I used a Marlin 22 Hornet. It’s 4 shot clip was plenty.

Interesting. I knew about the donkeys and llamas. But I did not know about the mules. If true, I like the mule option. Mules can be used for riding too.

Learn how to call and get a spotlight

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/06-07-mammal-regs.pdf

Use of Lights
264. Use of Lights While Hunting—Specific
Areas.
(a) Lights of any size or voltage may be used to
take furbearing or nongame mammals only in the
areas described in subsections (b) and (c) below,
and only under the following conditions:
(1) The use of lights for night hunting is prohibited
in any area where the general deer season
is open.
(2) Furbearing mammals and nongame mammals
may be taken with the aid of a spotlight or
other artificial light operated from a vehicle provided
such vehicle is stopped and standing with
the motor off. No spotlight may be used from a
vehicle which is on a public road or highway.

Also if ya know anyone with a clasified mos do them a favor and keep quiet about it.

I agree, a 30-30 Winchester or Marlin lever would be a good choice. Open sights at that range would be an easy shot. And they are quite an inexpensive gun to purchase.

Yes, but get it in 12 gauge with a 3” chamber to take 2 3/4” and 3” shells. There was a thread a few days ago that some Freepers recommended the 870. IIRC, it priced around 235.00 to 250.00. I sold mine a few years ago. Great pump. #2s or double 00 shot is the ammo to use if you don’t want a slug bbl or shoot slugs.

“I’m suprised .22LR isn’t working.”

Hollow points probably would but I would go for something with a little more impact.

I think a good shotgun is the way to go if you’re actually planning on shooting them and not poisoning or trapping them somehow. Since you don’t already have a good shotgun, I especially suggest you use this as an excuse to go get one. A shotgun is the most versatile fiream you can possibly own. I’d go with a nice pump action, not too expensive, that can double as a home defense weapon. Some brands have interchangeable barrels for slugs, etc. Some barrels have adjustable chokes. Some barrels have removeable chokes.

Another option I havn’t seen anyone here bring up is a thompson contender. I’m pretty sure you can get barrels for blackpowder for it. I’m not sure about shotgun barrels though. But they are only single shot. If you don’t like single shot guns it may not be to your liking.
